Hi all,

Apologies if covered elsewhere, but has anyone got any experience with this calibre? Looking at using it on chamois/roe deer stalking (long range) as well as driven (short range). It looks like European manufacturers (RWS, Norma...) have varying bullet weights that would make this ok for most species..

Best wishes

Cracking calibre, European 270, on steroids !

I normally have it set up with a thermal for night shooting boar, but also use it sometimes for stalking. Norma Oryx 156gn, but I wouldn't use them for long range, they're a bit of a brick.

I fancied trying it for driven boar, so just reloaded with a 170gn Norma Vulkan at circa 2900fps. Happy it will do it's job, if I do.

For long range deer, etc', I'd look at something circa 140gn-150gn. ELD-X, SST, ABLR, Sierra GK, all very good.

I got the 7x65R for my drilling. Its the rimmed version. I load it to the max with 175gr Interlocks or 175gr woodleigh PP. Its a great cartridge.

I have a 7x64 and like it a lot. (in fact I'm on my second)

Lots of choice in bullet weights - I think optimal bullet weights for most "general" stalking are in the 150-165gr weight range. If driven boar was the quarry as @Lateral says, Oryx will do you well and there are 175gr options from people like Sierra, Nosler, Speer and Hornady.

Geco 165gr is worth a look as not too pricey and very effective. Also a good source brass for reloading. I would be tempted to look at the Sierra 165gr TGK as a long range option - seems to be getting some good reviews out of NZ for hunting chamois and tahr and looks suitably slippery.

7x64 is quite cable at range - I've shot mine out to 1,200 this summer at Bisley (180gr Hornaday ELD-M over RS70) and it did well. When I tested for accuracy I held just over 1/2 an MOA at 1,000 yds for elevation (Let's not talk about my wind reading for the windage). I also shot the 160gr TMK (over N165) and that didn't do badly either.

Powders wise, N160, N165 and RS70 seem to do a lot of good things in my experience.

For more load data, you can look across at the 280 Rem which is a very similar chambering (NB Make sure you are happy to do this at your own risk) but a side by side comparison shows they are very similar.

Scrummy

I have one. Seems to work fine. Getting ammunition not a problem for me. Very happy with the GECO stuff which outshoots me by a margin!

I have the rimmed version 7x65R - lovely calibre. And very versitile. You can use a 173gn bullet that is more than capable for thumping big large animals. I have shot 100kg Boar with mine without any fuss or bother.

With a streamlined 140 to 156 grain bullet it has a high ballistic coefficient and enough case capacity to push it fast and flat. I have some RWS loaded with their non-toxic HIT Bullet at 2,900 fps. Normal inch high at 100 zero, I am hitting a 5" gong on the range at 230 metres in the centre with cross hairs in the centre.

Yet you can also load a 140 gn at a mild 2600 fps and good for Roe etc. - I have used such a load - a 139gn Hornady softpoint over IMR 4831 to take lost of Roe from 20 yards out to 200. They have all fallen over without much fuss. And also taken lots of foxes with the same load. And out of a 26" barrel its pretty quiet.

I have taken one Chamois, but not with my rifle, but no reason why it should n't work very well.

I am very surprised that the 7x64 / 65r are not more popular in the UK. They don't have the high pressure crack of the 270, and don't have the recoil of the 30-06 and mostly very smooth shooting. Yes with big bullets and fast loads they have a bit of recoil, but in my combination gun I reckon the 16 bore barrel probably has more. And yet they are very well balanced and a god all rounder. Any better than the 7x57 - possibly - but not at the smaller bullet weights, albeit a lot of 7x57 ammo is not loaded to its full potential. But it does have quite more authority when you getting to the heavier bullet weights.

Ammo is available in the UK, and increasingly available. But it is not everywhere, and you do need to think ahead a wee bit. It helps if you have a reasonable quantity on your ticket so you can buy 100 rounds at a time. RWS is good ammo, but expensive. Geko is just as good, but much much more affordable, and look down at Sellier & Bellot and Prvi as they are very affordable and work well. Beauty of the 7x64 is you don't need expensive bullets to work well. And its straightforward to reload.

Here is a video of the 7x65R which I posted elsewhere:

and this is well worth a read

The Vulcan 170gr is closer to 2756fps. But still plenty for just about anything.

Interestingly not listed on the Alliant or Nosler websites. I would have thought it was too slow but obviously not.

Understand but getting close to 3200ftlb is right up there with a hot load on a 30-06 with a 165gr projectile and given it has a small diameter, I'd expect the pressures to be pretty darn high.
