What’s the WORST 4x4 you’ve owned?

They are good, had one years ago.
Not when you weigh 100 kilos are hunched up like a terrier effn a football and have your arm equipped with an 8" dia spotlight waving around out of the drivers window as you drive in hilly country spotting rabbits for the shooter.

My Discovery 3 was categorically the worst 4x4, and vehicle, I've ever owned when it came to reliability. And I've owned a lot of peugeots! Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. And everything that went wrong cost minimum £1000, with some jobs between 2-3k.

On the flip side, it was also the best 4x4 I've ever owned. It looked great, was super versatile, outstanding off road, could drive it from Peterborough to Austria in a day without discomfort.

Hence I've got a Discovery 4 at the minute, which will be changed for a Discovery 5 next year 👍

Surprised Jeep doesn’t get a mention, had to pull one out of a puddle in a stubble field, the water didn’t even get to the alloys 😂

Oddly enough, I am not a jeep fan, but I sold my pick up and needed something to tide me over so bought a cheap Jeep Cherokee CRD which I intended to only keep a few months.....I’ve still got it a year and a bit later! It’s fantastic! Built like a tank, has the highest towing capacity for weight of vehicle (nearly 3 tons) and it seems solidly built....no major frills but as a workhorse it’s great!

Gixer

Fool!

Series 1 Discovery P38 Rangie then L322 Rangie. Every one had multiple faults every year. After 15 years of trying to be loyal gave up and bought a Hilux

We had a fleet of brand new tata crew cab pickups once they didn't make the first mot pure dung
I have one, a Xenon 4 years ownership in and it still works, a bit rough around the edges but for scraping through the narrow forrest tracks around here it is good enough and it was cheap as chips to buy with 35k kms on the clock. Too good to scrap at only 100k now kms so I may just keep it just for hunting, I have bought a 2 y/o Subaru Impreza for normal daily use.

everything that possibly could do went wrong with that Disco 3 in space of about 2 months, nightmare car!!

Landrovers without a doubt, had nine of them some my own some supplied by my employer everyone let me down some
Mechanically but most with chassis rot , one that need the chassis welded for it's very first Mot

Best a few contenders for this category Vitara, Sj410, but first prize probably would go to my Pajero no mechanical
problems but eventually the chassis let me down welded it up.got a years ticket on it ( would probably be its last)
and sold it at motor auction.

Most surprising Honda CRV didn't like the idea of 4x4 that engages automatically but it works remarkably well
a suspension lift and a set of AT tyres and it can cope with most situations.
Only the lack of a low box stops it from being my number one 4x4 of all time

Really got me thinking, I honestly cannot say which is the worse off roaderI have had, it is horses for courses. But if you haven’t got decent tyres, and had decent training, every 4x4 is rubbish.

My career job dictated I needed a 4x4, I had three Defenders, great off road, but really uncomfortable if you are a larger person. I am 6’ 105kg, and they just didn’t fit me at all, so not for me.

I had a Disco commercial for a while, quite liked it, OK off road with BFG ATs, comfortable ride, and actually reliable! So OK.

Around 20 years ago I opted to get a pick up, L200, not getting into “what pick up is best” but if transformed my life, I am now on my third, a Ranger. Surprisingly good off road, comfortable, flexible, versatile, I could put the stinking dogs in the back, I always have a top. Deer and rabbits etc in the back, I have had piglets , lambs, calf’s etc all separate from me, pheasant feed by the tonne. Surprisingly nimble when out with the lamp on the rabbits/foxes, and the missus likes to be sat up high, so she can see over our Devon hedges. She is a short arsed Jock........Richard, DDS, don’t tell her I said that

I did a few off road training days, my employer dictated we did it every three years, not complaining because they were bloody good fun, all paid for, and getting paid. If you have never done one, then do a LR experience day, the last one I done was bloody brilliant, on a seriously arse twitching course. Despite how many years you have been driving on the rough stuff, you WILL learn a lot, and most 4x4 cars will be far better for it.

So for me, not really had a bad 4x4. I have been stuck more times than I can remember, been towed out, winched out, but was it the vehicles fault.......Nope, it was my fault for being a dickhead.

But for me, a pick up with good tyres, is the best 4x4.........It does everything. 👍😀
