Really got me thinking, I honestly cannot say which is the worse off roaderI have had, it is horses for courses. But if you haven’t got decent tyres, and had decent training, every 4x4 is rubbish.
My career job dictated I needed a 4x4, I had three Defenders, great off road, but really uncomfortable if you are a larger person. I am 6’ 105kg, and they just didn’t fit me at all, so not for me.
I had a Disco commercial for a while, quite liked it, OK off road with BFG ATs, comfortable ride, and actually reliable! So OK.
Around 20 years ago I opted to get a pick up, L200, not getting into “what pick up is best” but if transformed my life, I am now on my third, a Ranger. Surprisingly good off road, comfortable, flexible, versatile, I could put the stinking dogs in the back, I always have a top. Deer and rabbits etc in the back, I have had piglets , lambs, calf’s etc all separate from me, pheasant feed by the tonne. Surprisingly nimble when out with the lamp on the rabbits/foxes, and the missus likes to be sat up high, so she can see over our Devon hedges. She is a short arsed Jock........Richard, DDS, don’t tell her I said that
I did a few off road training days, my employer dictated we did it every three years, not complaining because they were bloody good fun, all paid for, and getting paid. If you have never done one, then do a LR experience day, the last one I done was bloody brilliant, on a seriously arse twitching course. Despite how many years you have been driving on the rough stuff, you WILL learn a lot, and most 4x4 cars will be far better for it.
So for me, not really had a bad 4x4. I have been stuck more times than I can remember, been towed out, winched out, but was it the vehicles fault.......Nope, it was my fault for being a dickhead.
But for me, a pick up with good tyres, is the best 4x4.........It does everything.
