Can Large wild cats be shot AOLQ

How do you confirm a feral cat is feral? I have cats round the farm and they seem to belong to someone, as we have a few houses locally. I am tempted because of the wildlife but so far have not as possibly unwise and it may belong to a child. As regards Puma - get a big net that wont risk your FAC but you could do guided "Big Cat" stalks and make a fortune or start a CSC 1 and maybe 2 and make some money that way. Alternatively if you are a member of BASC or one of the other Orgs you could ask them - dont be put off by the sound of laughter on the other end of the phone.

You've got to be kidding!
Actual evidence of big cats in the wild as in "hanging on yonder hook" or "here am I posed behind the inert body of an alien moggy" would cause a multiplication in sightings.
All those "I thought I saw but decided it couldn't be..." and "I once saw a sabre-toothed tiger just outside........" would get fresh oxygen aplenty.

A friend was stalking in a forrest in Scottish borders and a Lynx walked out of the trees offering an easy 50m shot... his rifle was already on the sticks. So he's stood ready to take the shot with this cat looking at him. He decides not to shoot in case he doesn't kill it and it rakes his dog while departing it's mortal coil. Anyway, he reports the sighting to the landowners representative and was given a rollicking and told next time to shoot it. The landowner was National Forrestry Service. I've often wondered how many big cats have been shot and buried by rangers working for the authorities. Yet if you or I shoot Bagpuss we'd be left to face the media storm of rabid antis with no support from those same authorities.

BTW cut the sarcasm, this is an important subject because the antis and media would love to attack all gun owners should one of us be foolish enough to shoot one of these big cats because of landowner pressure and it leak out. We need to be unified on this point as, in my humble opinion, it's an own goal waiting to happen.

I've seen the tracks of a big cat in the snow on our perm. I was with guy that used to guide in Namibia... he said it was a big puss. I remained sceptical, but was up there with a pal last Oct. We both sat out til gone dark me round the shoulder of the hill about 3 quarters of a mile from him. When I got back to the car after dark he was waiting for me white as a sheet. I thought he looked I'll and as he's going on 70 asked him what the heck was wrong. He said he'd been laying out by the logging road and as it was just going dark he moved to get up and was startled by a loud low growl close behind him. He turned around but saw nothing but vis was down to 20ft. He thought it was me creeping up on him so laughed and made his way back to the car expecting me to be there which took him 10 mins. But I wasn't there, so he got out the flask expecting me to pop out from a nearby bush. After 5 mins the moon had come out and he sees me walking from the opposite side of the hill and he gets the shivers as he knows it's impossible for me to cover the ground between us in that time. BTW, this guy has served 30 years as a professional keeper all over country and is used to being out at night. Couldn't get him to stay out alone on that ground after that... don't know what it was but it stalked him, don't think I made him feel better either when I suggested it was a good job he moved or he could have been panther pooh... humour not being my strong point.
A friend had occasion to have a mountain lion look askance at him while hunting elk, he found the cat and a gut pile together, shot at and missed the cat who was about to charge. The cat left unharmed my friend had no mountain lion tag and was dismayed he missed. My thought was fine you missed no need to explain and no claw and bite marks on your hide all is well. Unless you know a large feline is about to harm you shooting is very probably a mistake. Do large felines exist in the UK?

Just watched (Yesterday) A zoo keeper doing a study on big cats, He was working inside an Cheetah enclosure with at times two of them, I was mentally comparing their size to him, And their power with just a paw swipe when they were off program ...... something of their size intending to engage rather than retreat, you do the math.

with all these big cats roaming the countryside I am perplexed as to why there is not one scrap of photographic or video evidence from the multitude of wildlife and security cameras that now monitor the countryside 24/7/365.
A photograh or video would be worth a 6 figure sum to the tabloids so I live in hope that one of my monitoring cameras wins this lottery for me.

Not for me to go out and look for it to shoot it .
But if your life or somebody else is in immediate danger there would no be a problem.
