Freyr and Devik

I genuinely think if a manufacturer included decent cross-section diagrams of their products with decent measurements they could gain a lot of market share and sell more moderators.
Particularly from China, now you’d really be talking about ’quality’😷

God knows, awaiting a replacement baffle stack now
I guess where they seem to be damaged is at the outside of the casting and damage to the hottest part should be caused by the gasses? Perhaps the alloy didn’t flow properly and was left with weaker areas. This is all guesswork but mine seems fine with a few 20-30 shot strings with some hottish loads.

I’m hopeful there was a manufacturing issue but only time will tell

It looks like a problem with the material as the damage is nowhere near the gas. That isn't gas cutting. Gas cutting would be on the inside of the baffle stack. Which probably explains the failures FE have had.

That’s exactly what I thought

Had a look at my 30 cal FW196, bought last June from Cluny but only obtained from my RFD when my variation finally came back in September 20. Less than 100 rounds through it and always dried out after a wet outing before being stored. Thoughts.......

Looks fine. If you want to avoid the little surface staining that is showing you would need to clean after every outing. It not the rain that matters, its the gasses and residues left by the shot.

I’ll take some better pics tomorrow- it’s not surface staining it’s pits. The ones at the edges are possibly to be expected it was the 2 in mid-face that surprised me.

Will be interesting to see, but as I said, its not drying after a wet outing that is important is clearing the residue after every outing - a quick squirt of WD40 does the job

I don’t normally spray my mod through as I typically fire only one cartridge per stalk  This from a colleague is at the back of my mind........721339CA-FAA8-4405-8FEA-F655D9900ADA.webp

I would hazard a guess it was the oil and not the WD-40 that caused the smoke.

I have an old “original” air rifle that I had when I was a kid. Thinking I was doing the right thing I would clean it with oil filling the spring and washers. It would smoke like crazy on some occasions until my dad caught me in the act of cleaning and out a stop to it.

WD-40 is a water displacer, it evaporates off.

I just wish I had used it in my Ase Utra jet-z....

I have seen the exact same thing happening at the range. And it was definitely the oil in the mod. It had just been sprayed the night before.

The reason I now also have a F&D mod is that you can open it easily and scrub or wash the crud off on the inside. I am hesitant to spray any oil in it as I am certain that this will increase carbon buildup, burning temperature and ultimately material fatigue. After all, oil will burn and leave residue.
The first thing I did to the new mod was to open it and remove any grease from the inside. Interestingly enough there were lumps of grease on exactly those edges that show signs of deterioration on some of the pictures on this thread.

Looks like material degradation. Nowhere near any gases, hence no gas cutting. Have you approached Cluny with your findings. I'm sure they'd be willing to sort this out as they are the UK distributor.
