60 mph speed limit

Just read that some of the motorway speed limits have been reduced to 60mph to reduce emissions….is this correct? Are we really the only country who’s speed limits are going backwards!!! What a crock these environmentalist lunatics suggestions and implementations are…🙄

get a grip and get the limits up, not down! We need to improve the standard of driving, not reduce limits to allow for Poor driving!

Try driving past Brummigum on the m6 Gixer ,a ten mile belt of variable speed limit cameras 🤯
But it goes 30 50 ,40 ,60 to catch the unwary and last time I looked I'm sure that increased pollution no decreased it 🤔
Governed by morons and minister moron married a green loon so we've had it till she catches him in bed with the next 1 🙃

I think the motorway speed through roadworks have been INCREASED to 60 mph.
The US has/had a 55 mph speed limit to save fuel, I thought.

@gixer1, how do you propose to do that then?

Not sure I agree with the OP. I was on the receiving end of 31 vehicles at 70 mph a few years ago. 1 fatality in the car next to me and it was only that low due to modern car design.

The speed limit is 70mph but the majority of drivers have 50mph brains.

It is true -https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-54130862

Since 1963 and older, vastly more polluting vehicles and with the advent widely of electric cars .......... Daft Pricks

In the borders we have had 20mph limits in towns for the lat year or two…outcome is more collisions and people hit due to drivers not focusing due to the slow speed and being so bored they use they phones for work/recreational purposes more whilst driving. Well done 👍

Do you really think it’s the majority though? I would say it’s a minority and do you think speed was the issue in your accident or incompetence?

M4 motorway in South Wales on English border is a fixed 50 mph average speed camera area now for miles to reduce emissions

Inappropriate speed. I had to stop behind a three vehicle crash which had blocked the M40. I managed it but several lorries, vans and cars didn’t.

Having driven 20k+ miles a year for over three decades for work I would say the majority of drivers are about 60% invested in their driving the rest is conversations with passengers, dealing with children, doing their hair and/or makeup, texting, doing Facebook updates, shaving, eating their breakfast/lunch/dinner/snack, drinking coffee/fizz/beer or f’ing about with the radio. I have personally seen all of these over the years and frankly it’s just blind luck that saves most of them.

The national speed limits won’t change but they will be reduced in areas under the green cloak of environmentalism that seems to be primarily there to hide taxation and revenue generation.

I would rather see some sort of refresher test to make those of us that know it all appreciate that maybe we don’t know it all.

I fully agree, the truth is that most people avoid accidents only by luck, and that on the whole poor/inattentive driving doesn't have consequences (legal or otherwise)
I would also support refresher training and a far better and more comprehensive initial training/test. A lot of people pass their test and then their driving gets WORSE rather than better both in technical skill and "roadsense". I remember somebody once who had probably been driving nearly as long as I'd been alive, asking me why there was sometimes a broken white line in the centre and sometimes solids!

Part of my commute used to involve the A1 into London.

Get the timing wrong and it was horrendous. As I left the M25 it was exactly that.

I was sat behind a female driver in the long queue down to Staples Corner.

I was utterly mesmerised as she transformed herself with a full make over. By the time she got to Staples Corner she was stunning.

Although I agree with the statements concerning some drivers on our roads, we do have it far better than most places on the continent (apart from Scandinavia). Italians are probably the worst I’ve experienced in Europe; overtaking on blind bends is a favourite of theirs!

We are fighting a losing battle, ... Me to the Missus . . . "F****ng morons not using indicators", Missus to me (She is a qualified assessor for County Council) " AAH, They don't teach that anymore" :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:
Recent driving assessment for me, in a 44 tonner, Assessor to me, " Why are you using the gearbox to slow down, the brakes are for slowing, " Seems he couldn't grasp the fact I was using both brakes and gears in tandem.
