Is there a shortage of deer? wheres Jim?

Parts of Scotland now have very few deer, especially those areas close to public sector owned land. I normally take half a dozen bucks a year off the bits of ground I manage and have done so for the last ten odd years. I have seen ONE buck this year. I have major areas of forestry within a mile or so as the crow flies, and the contractors have been shooting everything that moves, which has in turn sucked all the deer out of the neighbouring areas. And they have been helping themselves to plenty of other beasts on neighbouring lands.

ok thats good to know, appreciate the information but is this posted in the right place? seems to fit in better with one of the other posts in this section of the forum

Hi guys and guyesses, ive recently emailed 3 different stalking companies for my area of Norfolk/suffolk border with a look to doing my first stalk, but none of them seem interested in my business, they all said on their website that they take inexperienced people, I have even phoned one of them who have told me that someone will get back to me, but as you can guess ive still had no reply, this was nearly two weeks ago, which if they were stupidly busy is fine just to say they have no room to take me on but to totally leave me hanging seems a bit unnecessary ,
It seems to be endemic now that a lot of businesses don't want your business, either 'because of Brexit' causing difficulties
, or 'because of Covid'. I have had huge problems trying to buy an almost new truck (Didn't manage via Authorised dealers in August 2020, trying both Ford for a Ranger and Toyota for a Hilux...); and currently I seem to run into a stone wall trying to get quotes for a boiler upgrade. More relatable to Stalking is my story about trying to get back into Predator fishing on the River Severn, Zander in particular. Several 'Fishing guides' are touting for business online, but calls are not returned, emails are not replied to, and it appears that some feel that 'because of Covid' it is still far too dangerous for two men to be on a boat on the river, so they are not taking any bookings. And this is end September 2021...

I would recommend Jim Riley (DGVM) too.

BASC Hockwold is pretty much on hold I believe as they are waiting on lease renewal later this autumn. However, you can contact the administrator Audrey Watson direct on 07971 432680 rather than calling Marford Mill and leaving a message.

excellent stuff, thank you

wont be able to make this, just cannot see a sensible way to get to bedford from lowestoft on a 125cc scooter, nice thought but just not realistic, so sorry
Get a train and B&B, surely someone with the user name ‘urbansurvivor’ should be at least a little adaptable!

If you want to stalk you’d find a way!

 did try the only mate that was likely to be able to help me out with a car but thats gone south so to speak, and a train isnt a bad idea until i get a deer to bring back, of course the 4 grand train fare is a bit of a sod too

What hunting/stalking have you been up to since joining in 2014?
Been getting rather good with the shotgun, hunting pigeon, rabbit, hare etc, been on a few driven shoots and have been goose hunting with a syndicate club for a season until realising geese really isnt for me. also took some advice off a stalker from down south on learning stalking skills without the need for the rifle part of it by simply pulling the trigger(button) on a camera instead, so can say with confidence that if i needed to i could take a mean photo of almost any species within the range of rifle shot. and ive put a decent amount of shots through a 243 owned by a farmer out near where i live who i have become good mates with due to out mutual obsession with fishing, so i do have a little range shooting experience (shooting, not hunting)

Please do go on...

Lol - would you ride to a stalk in full hunting gear with you rifle on your back?

Does your moped have a basket for a carcass after a successful stalk?

Not a lot as he couldn’t get there on his moped. Does all seem a bit odd, he only joined a year after me!
Please dont start all that crap about it seeming odd, or things not adding up, im not after a freebie, if your only method of getting anywhere was by scooter would you be ok travelling 2 hundred miles to get there in winter? then carrying a deer carcass back? i dont need to explain myself to anyone really but ive done plenty of hunting since i joined here, just not the sort that i want to be doing at this point in my life, so im asking the forum for the help that people should be asking for ok

 i was thinking of sitting the deer up on the back seat and putting a helmet on it and seeing if that would be ok to travel the 160 miles back home, couldnt get stopped more than a dozen times surely

It’s not your only method though is it, public transport is available!

What I mean is it seems odd that you come on saying you’d like stalking but no one is coming back to you, Malcolm then says he can fit you in, you then come up with a reason not to go.

If you are going in December the it will be cool enough to transport a quartered animal back in a ruck sack.
