Now I'm very much pro the Union but that comment does not make sense. If the Scott’s truly want independence you need to give the English a vote on it too . £20.00 says your be gone like a shot .
England is bankrupt and unable even to control how it reduces its stratospheric debt levels. England can't even put up taxes for fear of tanking the economy even more. And it can't reduce tax because the markets responded in the worst way possible. Phooked either way. How's that 'taking back control of our borders' going, BTW?If there was a referendum in England about independence from Scotland, Wales and NI the answer might delight the wee one. The fair proportionate share of national debt might not.
Worth going to iplayer and listening to Michael Portillo’s Things We Foregot to Remember on The Real Reason Behind The Act of Union.
Scotland was bankrupt England provided a bailout. Nothing changes.

Kiss my ass you tedious plonker!Dry your eyes dear. Haters always gonna hate and you're no different. You totally ignore the point that you love socialist policies when it suits you (free prescriptions, anyone?) but cry when you have to actually pay for those things. Tories are the worst when it comes to dodging tax. Why should I go to another forum? All you want is sycophants to slap your back? Get real![]()
why? Too much pain heating a different opinion no doubtI do not know who Kevin Alexi is but his comments and perhaps him have no place on SD.
Thats a sad and stupid response - is it even English.why? Too much pain heating a different opinion no doubt![]()
My father went into a care home in Aberdeenshire. Its was £750 a week because he had some savings. The chap in the room next door was paid by the council.that doesn't happen in Scotland, care is universal and you don't need to pay - unless you opt to go private.
The UK is currently in a difficult position.England is bankrupt and unable even to control how it reduces its stratospheric debt levels. Yeshave you seen the privatisation of the NHS in England? Remind me in Scotland how much you have to pay for care when you are elderly...do you need to sell your home to pay for it?
so a guy with some money pays until he has less money, and the guy with no money still gets looked after. Where's the issue? It's about ensuring everyone can get help, and nothing wrong with making it means tested. Plenty of other benefits (which this is) are means tested. You or I don;t get Universal Credit unless we're unable to work. Care is no different. My father went into a care home in Aberdeenshire. Its was £750 a week because he had some savings. The chap in the room next door was paid by the council.
Oh yes you dothat doesn't happen in Scotland, care is universal and you don't need to pay - unless you opt to go private.
No issue, I was just correcting your assertion thst care was free in Scotland.Where's the issue?
Only if you have some money, and quite a lot of it.Oh yes you do
It is free unless oyu have quite a bit of money stashed away for a rainy day...being unable to care for yourself falls into the 'rainy day' description. No issue, I was just correcting your assertion thst care was free in Scotland.
Not really, many hard working people have assets they have scrimped saved for to support them in retirement, all while paying taxes. Are you suggesting these people should have sat on their backsides and lived of welfare?Only if you have some money, and quite a lot of it.
I've no idea, do a google search and let us know what you find.so here's one. your father goes into care home, has few savings and a home. he's married...does the council force the wife to sell the house to pay for the care and leave her on the street? or do they accept she needs her house to live in an subsidise the care?
The marital home is safe until the last survivor of the marriage requires careso here's one. your father goes into care home, has few savings and a home. he's married...does the council force the wife to sell the house to pay for the care and leave her on the street? or do they accept she needs her house to live in an subsidise the care?
Why is it always the assumption that people receiving benefits at that point in time "have sat on their backsides scrounging and living on welfare"? It's a pathetic attitude and anecdotal pish. Not really, many hard working people have assets they have scrimped saved for to support them in retirement, all while paying taxes.
