Recommendations for economical hard rifle cases

I had a hard case for one of my Beretta shotguns that I repurposed with for my Anschutz 1417 with some pick and pluck foam from a Peli. Might be a cheap alternative for you.

I'm sure you could do a better job than I did. I didn't bother drilling out holes for a cable or padlock. I just put padlocks through both handles.
(I actually carry the bolt and mag in a separate lockable case these days. Too insecure otherwise.)

I have a couple of pelicases that I use when travelling by air. Would not use any thing else.
I also have a Nuprol case for my .22 that I use if travelling with a loaded boot in the car. The Nuprol is suitable for that but not for air travel. The Peli 1700 fits nicely in the boot of my car but the 1720 and 1750 are just too long.

Get the secondhand Peli and just put some foam in the base and some for the top to pinch the rifle when closed you don’t need the full cut out job.

I just did a quick google search and it just came back with official foam for about £100. Are you suggesting I could get some some foam from like a upholstery shop and cut it to size myself? (I would guess its hard to get exactly the right thickness but I haven't tried yet) or that there are other companies that supply foam sets for pelican cases that are already cut to the correct size that would be a bit cheaper than original foam sets?

If its the latter I can probably reconsider my stance on the used Peli cases. I've seen a few around the £200 mark that previously I thought would be too expensive once I buy the foam as well.
Plenty of cheaper alternatives other than Peli orig replacement foam. @EMcC has a bright idea. Not very often admittedly. 😂

This

Cheap cases are cheap for a reason

They simply are not made as well

I’ve a few peli cases that have done thousands f miles with couriers and airport baggage staff - contents of cases un damaged

I’ve been sent rifles in cheaper cases that have arrived with barrels poking out of holes in the case side and in one instance the stock was broken in two pieces

False economy if your travelling

Maybe ok if you are keeping the rifle under your own control perhaps but even then why put an expensive firearm and glass in a n inferior protective case ,,,

Recommend you take a look here

Several options under £100 and having ordered from this website a few times (including replacing something damaged in transit) have found them to be very helpful.

For £150, I think you'd struggle to beat one of these - ALL WEATHER RIFLE CASE

Comes with the foam as well. I have one and while it's not as bomb proof as a Peli (which I also have) it's very robust.

Buy this one and don’t look back. If you were flying I would say buy a secondhand peli.

I don’t bother with foam and use an AIM rifle bag inside a peli so I have a decent protective bag to carry my rifle and sundries about once I’m at my location.

These hard cases are big and heavy to be lugging about in all honesty. An AIM bag provides all the protection you should ever need when transporting a rifle to and from any shooting location. Be that stalking, hunting or to the range.

I found there's nothing more economical than buying a second hand peli for £200ish using it for however long and then being able to sell it for £200ish when the time comes. They seem to hold their value very well.

Really depends on how case is going to be handled. If its going to be thrown around by airline baggage handlers then Peli type case is needed.

But if its you in your own vehicle pretty much any hard or thickly padded soft case will give more than adequate protection.

Going back to long distance travel get a shorter case and take stock off the rifle. Shorter cases will be less prone to damage. Most rifles go back to pretty close zero when stock is put back on, and in any case best practice after long travelling for a test shot or two to check zero.

How are shorter cases less prone to damage. Surely the big ones are made to the same strength and harder to throw around.

I got rid of both of mine as I’m not planning on flying with a rifle in the near future and they are pig to handle and store.

The small ones are far easier to handle. The OP has been clear this is for domestic transport so removing a stock isn’t an option.

Much less leverage - put a long case with ends suported by other cases and drop another in the middle. It will bend and stock snapped.

Short shotgun length case, very much less likely to be suspended, bent etc. as its the same length as most suitcases, bags etc.

a long peli isn’t snapping any time soon with a truck loaded in the middle much less other cases but I see your logic.
