Sound moderators

I been hearing that the police will be taking sound moderators off firearms certificates, has anyone heard of when this could be happening?

It could happen - it doesn’t really make sense anyway. Have one on an air rifle and you can have it without a licence, but as soon as that rifle is over 12ft/lb it’s a licencable part? 🤔

And it’s not like a moderator on its own is dangerous either.

Expanding ammo came off section 5 after all.

Isn't it about time the BASC, the one that fights our corner for firearm users, got a grip and pushed it towards the removal from FC status.
As most do not have serial numbers it would make things a lot easier when deciding to exchange one with your local FD.
It could still be referred to on the Fc when quoting the firearm by just adding the Firearm and a moderator can be used for etc etc.

That Mods are treated the same as a firearm is poorly thought through, wastes police resources, slows down applications and renewals, in the cold light of day they are metal tubes with baffles in them

it is an anomaly from the days when the view was that 'silencers' or moderators were only used by assassins and therefore no a good idea for members of the public to have. that view has changed due to the benefits to hearing/noise complaints etc. it has been muted (pun intended) to happen but will probably wait until the next load of changes so as to not use up parliamentary time.

there are a number of weird things due to laws being written by people with little actual knowledge of a subject..... As i understand it, Flash eliminators are subject to licence but muzzle brakes are not..... at least one company makes the same item and boxes them separately 1 as brakes, 1 as eliminators......

The rumour has some grain of truth. It’s all based on some lobbying by interested parties. See below.

Unfortunately, just because a (junior and out of favour) Government Minister throws out a soundbite, doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen.

It doesn’t make political sense for HMG to be exploring easing firearms legislation (in the eyes of the general public) just as the Coroners report into the Plymouth shootings and the Scottish DA enquiry into the events on Skye, are suggesting the opposite.

SpAds will be making that point very loudly when faced with any such proposal. Plus it will need a change to primary legislation - and even a Statutory Instrument takes time to sort…..something the present incumbents of the Government benches don’t have.

No matter how logical it is, I suspect the optics and timings are all wrong……

Fixed it for you...

Go and watch FSC from last night. Good section on it. BASC and an MP making sensible suggestions which will make it easier.
Whether the crap government we have listen is a different matter.
