Yup, that fixes one problem, but how do you scale the cost depending on road use?

At the moment someone driving an older small car with a tiny engine who covers a modest amount of miles per year will pay a modest amount of tax both for VED and at the pump. If you apply a blanket fee for electric cars and you have someone doing likewise with a small electric vehicle then they get disproportionately hammered. Unless you link it to mileage, but then you need to know exactly how many miles everyone drives and that means good old big bro having access to your activities, and I’m not entirely sure that people would like that.

It’s a real tough nut to crack as you can’t suddenly make lower earners who need cars unable to afford them esp in rural areas as how do they then get to work?

Disproportionate taxation is the real risk here and I haven’t heard anyone come up with anything that will truly work. Yet!
The old Road Tax arrangement had a Morris Minor owner paying the same as a Toff with a Bentley?

Don’t bother voting as really cannot be bothered due to state of nation and mind set of majority and where everything is heading in general regardless who lies to us for our own good.
Did tick “ no” box on here and would not waste one second of my remaining brain cells on any thought, might have a watch if some decent Totty turned up and no other reason.
Refraining from voting is a vote for the Tories.
Better off voting for a no hope party than not voting at all.

Yes it did and then it aligned to co2 which kind of made sense (bigger more polluting engine usually in bigger and more expensive car)
At some point the govt will need to charge tax on EV’s because they still knacker the roads, so soon that ‘benefit’ will go and that could well impact on the sales of new EV’s.

It’s a dogs dinner for sure.

Any govt is going to have to think very hard about how to fix the vat and duty hole left when all these things like fags and icu cars are banned.
The amount lost through vehicle fuel alone will be vast, let alone everything else.
How do you recover it? Put up car tax massively? That hits poor drivers more than rich ones!
Make electricity more expensive? Well that penalises those on low incomes or without a car (or both) excessively!

And then what do they do if we all install solar panels and solar batteries and consume less power produced on the grid - apply a solar panel tax?? Like being back in the Middle Ages with window taxes!!

No easy solutions here - you can’t tax the crap out of everything else just because you lose revenue from one sector.

Huge headache that no one is even raising ideas to solve, let alone real world solutions .
I think it could be inheritance tax that will skyrocket in the future

But only 4% of the uk population are affected by inheritance tax at the mo and most of them are Tory voters, so I can’t see that happening!

The rest are skint so no tax there!!

Maybe we will have to tax the big tech firms like Amazon and apple on their UK trade. After all they do benefit wonderfully from our custom, so paying a fair amount of tax is the least we could ask.

I didn't listen to it. Like many I would naturally vote Tory, but I certainly will not be voting for the current bunch. The are inept and crooked. And ip here in Scotland SNP are same level of ineptness and crookedness.

They have just ****ed away our tax money. Take HS2 - how much has been spent on this already. Yet we will have feck all to show for it. Our transport infrastructure is a joke. Indeed between them the Tories and the SNP have made the UK the laughing stock of the rest of the world.

Our economy is the same size as It was when they took over. Most other leading economies have doubled in that time.

Yet plenty in the UK will not realise that the emperor is totally naked and will just continue voting for them.

At the next election I will be voting tactically to ensure that we have a change of government.

To be honest I think everyone who has a vote, should vote, and if you don’t like any of the options write “non of the above”. Spoilt votes are still counted.

I would like to believe that are still some politicians who genuinely want to try and improve things and are genuinely sick and embarrassed by all the current shenanigans. But unless we all vote for change feck all will happen.

You can't keep taxing those with no money so its the wealthy that will have to pay more I think. They could easily lower the inheritance tax threshold to 250k from 325k? an easy way to make some money....

I’m running 2 work cars at present, a diesel for long non city trips & a petrol for city work & LEZ’s. What I don’t understand stand is why is the diesel road tax half the price of the petrol road tax?

Personally I dont get what all the fuss over HS2 north section being cancelled is about??
It shave minutes off current journey times anyway and at a ridiculous cost when the country is broke. I think The money is better spent elsewhere... Theres plenty more pressing issues than a quicker train that typically only helps a few commuting bankers anyway.

Wouldn’t be popular but would make some dosh. Always the ongoing argument re double taxation tho.

The facts have changed. It is costing my crony mates in the construction industry too much to employ people. So we will cancel HS2 and they can lay all the workers off but...as the contracts have already been signed...still pay the Tory donor bosses of these firms in full for work they now won't have to do.

It should never have been built in the first place. Just a folly for Cameron that has cost us all billions.
At least scrapping has saved up from staffing more billions into a useless piece of infrastructure
