Is the .270 the ultimate unfashionable all rounder...

Wonder how long before we see the .270 bullet put in a shorter fatter case and re-badged as , say, 6.8 x 43 or a 6.8 SPC ? Wonder if they'll call it the 6.8 NATO Creedmoor ? :-|
Check out the “SIG.277 Fury” - what a name. Allegedly going to be the new rifle for the US Army.

Fashions come and go but you can always get a second hand .270 with plenty of life left in it for not much money and you can get ammo for it in nearly any gunshop in the country. Whatever other interesting rifles I own, my Sako 75 in .270 will always have a space in the cabinet.

The 270w does a job and is well suited for deer culling. However, more has been invested by bullet manufacturers in the 6, 6.5, 7 and .300 bullets. Combine this with modern case designs which is designed to have powder burn more efficiently there is better options out there.

if you lined up 25-50 different all UK deer legal cals and chamberings and all were stocked similarly and good shooter fit, then picked one at random blindfolded and had to use it for the rest of your life - I reckon it wouldn’t matter one bit what you picked. The only thing that would be different is barrel life, factory ammo availability, and recoil….but performance on general deer management - same

Absolutely this.

I also think that if you lined up a selection of carcasses shot by all the different cartridges, you’d be very hard pressed to tell which was shot by what. Sure, you’d probably be able to separate .222 from .270. But everything in the middle? All much of a muchness and more influenced the specific bullet used rather than the cartridge.

The truth is no long high bc bullets made for it…. Twist to slow for high bc copper…..wouldn’t swap my 6.5x55 for one….. but they all kill deer

The facts are Stalking has become very popular of late with many people coming in to it direct with no previous experience so an open book when it comes to advertising. This means they will follow the current feeds in what is been spoken about as it sells, any of the 6-7mm centre-fires work just fine however when people talk bolicks about the .270 "kicks like a mule"
they need to get down the Gym or learn to hold a rifle correctly.
Some of the descriptions of other calibres "soft recoil" I think they must have been estate agents in a former life
"note the light and airy rooms"

Also I still feel like plenty of new .270s get sold there's a vast sea of shooters that dont want the pain of dealing with a buying a gun and not being well aware of common issues found with models/calibres.

Sometimes brand new is nicer in your mind too.

Gun shops probably wouldn't have them on-hand available too purchase If they werent popular enough most of the niche calibres are order-in (as far as I'm aware?)
Have a look on guntrader at how many new .270s there are verses .308, 30-06, 6.5 creedmoor

Kicks like a mule is irrelevant anyway seen as most shoot moderated these days anyway. Your Remington is a delight to shoot.

I'VE come to the conclusion about the .270 the ones that say it's a cannon and the recoil is like a car crash ! It's Just tomuch rifle for them :gheyfight:
Unmoderated it's a little loud! I am glad to have moderated mine now it's not much more than the .22-250

It’s not a bad cartridge but too fast and the bullet range is on the light side which limits it to longer shots unless you like your deer to come pre-minced in a hairy bag. :)

Perfectly serviceable but there’s better out there, like 7x57 which is more than 130years old. For a true allrounder you should look at 9.3x62.
