.45-70 for Deer (England)?

Can you use a rifle/shotgun combination gun for deer hunting in the UK,or is it only centre fire rifles that can be used for this purpose?.

Yes, a combination gun could be used, as far as I am aware. The rifle part of the combination would have to be of a deer legal calibre. The shotgun barrel of the combination could not be used on deer, except under certain very specific circumstances.

What constitutes a 'legal' deer caliber?..In NZ its anything centre-fire other than a .22 Hornet (on public land) if its private property then this rule does not apply.

Depends on species and which part of the uk.

England and wales .22 CF minimum 50 gr bullet & 1000 ft-lb for muntjac and Chinese water deer, .24 and 1700 ft-lb for all others.

Scotland same as muntie and Chinese for roe but no minimum calibre but 2450 fps minimum. Larger is 80 gr, 2450 fps and 1750 ft-lb.

Not sure for N. Ireland!

When the bits get back from the Anodisers and I get it fitted to the rifle,I will take a pic of the set-up we generally recommend on the .45-70.We do very few rifles in this caliber, but takedown single shots are somewhat popular in this country as they can be stowed in a backpack and taken out to be used if a opportunity presents itself on a hunting or hiking trip out in the sticks. One nice thing about the.45-70 and marlin .444 etc is that they lend themselves nicely to cast bullet shooting, keeps costs down and can be useful if component availability becomes an issue.

The bits got back from the Anodisers today....50 mm wide body that sits 6" back behind the muzzle and 7" forward of the muzzle....

What are you leaning towards as far as rifle selection?

Just picked up a Marlin 1895 SBL. When I first saw these I really didn't like the look of them, however once I thought about the more practical aspects I started to appreciate a few features that will make this an excellent short range hunting rifle - threaded muzzle, side eject, picatinny rail so I can quickly whip off the scope and go back to iron sights if I choose to, stainless action and a 19" barrel long enough to get a respectable velocity but still a lot shorter than my other rifles. Just need a DPT .45 mod for it now, typically Bill is in NZ at the mo so I'll have to be patient, or maybe carry on regardless and annoy anyone in earshot just ever so slightly until he gets back.

I've got a Ruger Marin SBL, really liked the look from the start, its been very nice to shoot too.

I didn't ask for a mod with mine....they gave me a slot for one anyway, might just get a brake for it.

Be aware that a brake will certainly reduce the recoil but it will simultaneously increase the noise. I have a first year Marlin Guide Gun with the factory ported barrel. It pretty mild in the recoil department, but it’s deafening in the noise department. Just don’t be surprised how loud it will be if you put a brake on it.
