.45-70 for Deer (England)?

How do you clean yours?
Ive heard of folk putting them in a dish washer. Have you tried it?
I tried it with brass 12g hulls, wasn't brilliant ...
i tried a dishwasher , i agree , not brilliant

i use an ultrasonic cleaner now then classic walnut tumble , the important thing is to get on it quick it's amazing how corrosive black is

I drop mine in some water with a little Fairy in it when at the range. Bore brush in a power drill works a treat when at home and be easier for you with your straight case, though doesn't get right to the bottom of course.

I hope the OP gets the ok for his 45-70. I’ve got two of them and it’s a very capable and versatile caliber. Trap Door loads are quite mild to shoot and still have plenty of juice for any deer. And in a modern Lever Action you can load up to power levels more than enough to kill anything you’ll encounter in Europe handily. Mine are both original Marlins. One is a first year guide gun with an 18” factory ported barrel. The other is the Cowboy version with a 26” full octagonal barrel. I hope you get the chance to own one.

Just picked up a Browning made 1886 in you guessed it 45-70.😍 Open sights only, beautiful fit and finish, action is smooth and beautifully engineered, ejection is like an artillery piece. Test drive with 405 grn S&Bs are no worse than a 12 bore. I will get hold of some Sierra 300grns and make up a load with some Reloader 7 I have knocking around. Looking forward to getting more familiar with how it shoots before taking it out to enjoy our long summer evenings.

Awesome! A beautiful piece of kit you have there. A great design and great execution by Browning. How about some pictures????

please don’t put a scope on such a classic piece 😁

The Browning 86s are really nice rifles , all the ones I've seen in action shoot really well . I think yours will grow on you , and spoil you for any other lever action , they're my favourite lever .

The Browning version was the first levergun I shot in 45/70, it was impressive. Sat on target off hand and that nugget sent wood blocks flying up the berm and kindling all at the same time, way more fun than using a hatchet.

Well, as promised its time for an update.

My new FAC dropped through the letterbox today, with the slot for a .45-70 granted, and conditioned for deer! Very pleased to say the least.

Huge thankyou to all those SD members who assisted me with this. Just having the names of a few who have previously had this granted, along with their police forces - oh and the Home Office guidance details, resulted in a very rapid process and no further kick back from the licensing department.

Time to go shopping, my kind of shopping!

Looking forward to getting back in the woods on my permissions, which are totally unmanaged and in a real mess, hence short, light, lever action territory.

You’re welcome, glad it worked out.

Congratulations! sounds ideal for your situation.
As a left field option a Baikal double rifle could be worth considering. Open sights are good and there is an option to mount a red dot. Very good for a fast snap shot , with an almost instant follow up in thick cover, if things are sub 50 yards. Addtional benefits are you can break it open for safely crossing a tangle of fallen trees, and you dont fling your precious brass into the undergrowth. With the jack screw it makes regulating the impact point of both barrels to your preferred load a doddle.
Despite the above all being valid I went for a levergun because as mentioned in an earlier post I chose with my heart something that gives me great joy!
All the best on scratching the itch!
