Disposing of shotguns on my ticket that aren't mine (yet)

Just had another thought. I would also inform YOUR FEO that you are trying to get these shotguns back to their owner.
You wouldn't want some spiteful so and so besmirching your reputation to your issuing FLD.
Not that an upstanding pillar of the community, such as a solicitor, would do such a thing.....
They'll just tell you it's a civil matter, not a police matter, and leave it at that.
All that matters to them is that the guns are on someone's certificate, and are properly secured.

A "friend" (I use inverted commas because we're not really that close - our daughters used to go to school together) asked me to sign his shotguns onto my licence as his had expired. The police were happy with this and although it was a nuisance having to fit them into my cabinet, they were safe enough.

However, that was over a year ago. His last text to me was in April (and I know he's still alive). I've had no compensation from him for storing his guns (3 x AYA SxS, a 12, a 20 and a 28 bore) and I'm fed up that I can't easily access my own rifles and shotguns as they're all crammed into one cabinet when before they were spread over 2. From speaking to a former police officer (active on here, only just left the force), the police aren't processing new applications at the moment and because his expired, this is how it was treated. I texted him yesterday to ask if he still wanted the guns but have had no reply.

My local RFD would charge £2 per gun, per week (+VAT) which amounts to over £300. At what point can I legally sell (or surrender) the shotguns? I doubt they're worth a lot of money although aforementioned former police officer has expressed an interest in buying the 20 bore. I don't have any 20 or 28 bore cartridges and my local supplier doesn't seem to do them - wouldn't want to have to buy an entire case.
There on your ticket, the way I see it is they’re your guns, if you have no paperwork in place that says that you are storing the guns for him for a given period I would sell the bloody things!

I was in a situation not much different than you, except I had them 10 years🙈😂

Send the owner a letter setting out that the items will be disposed off in 28 days this is reasonable. If no response you will assume the rights of ownership.

@spandit How were they entered onto your SGC? In column B it should read, "sold, let on hire, given or lent"
It doesn't change anything morally, but it might give said "friend" a kick up the rear to get things sorted.

I can't remember off hand, I'll check when I'm home

@spandit did you ever check on your ticket to how they were entered on it?

TBH, I think you need to forget any thought of recovering any payment for the storage so far, or actually getting ownership of the guns themselves, and just send, by Special Delivery, (pref both to his home and work addresses) a letter saying that he has 28 days to arrange collection by someone who has authority to take possession (I'd prob insist on it being a RFD, rather than another "mate" he is going to stitch up with free storage), or that you will hand them in to your FEO / Police Station for disposal.

Maybe send a copy of the letter to your FEO, just as a FYI, to explain the background.

At least that way you cannot be accused of theft or wanting to profit from it, and he'd struggle to say he hasn't been given plenty of opportunity to recover them. If he lives in the same Police area, a word with your FEO would be appropriate.

With benefit of 20:20 hindsight, you need to be very very clear with the owner of the guns when taking them onto your ticket for temporary storage.

I have done this. I have a rifle on my FAC that belongs to a close friend. It is a family heirloom and it will go to another of his family at some point, meanwhile I am its custodian.

I recently stored a couple of guns for a colleague. His late father was in the end stages of terminal cancer. Colleague did not have a SC. With the blessing of the FEO - whom I also know, I uplifted the guns, put them on my SC and informed Police of this. When his SC was completed I got an email from the FEO saying the SC had been issued - I transferred the guns across and confirmed that they had been done so.

I have “loaned” a couple of my shotguns to close friends for long term use by their children. As and when the kids grow out of them they will come back to me. I have told them to use but not abuse, but I have said if they do suffer damage make sure there is a good story to tell.

In terms of the OP, there is several hundred if not a couple of thousand in the value of the j gun uns concerned. The value belongs to the original owner. They are his property and he should benefit from any realisation of proceeds. As to storage fees - that comes down to agreement between the parties at the time of the initial transaction. You cannot just unilaterally declare that they are yours and that you are going to sell them.

Sorry for leaving you all in suspense. Basically, my licence expired but I managed to apply for a renewal just before (only a day). It meant I had to get rid of my guns as they wouldn't issue an extension. A good mate took my shotguns and I put my rifles and the 3 AYA into the local RFD, who had conveniently doubled his prices just before.

Had them in storage for a few months and then got my licences back. I left his shotguns there and where they are now, I don't know and don't really care. "Friend" hasn't been in touch either (well, they did contact my wife to ask what I'd like as a thank you, but that was the last of it - nothing as yet received). He was the father of my daughter's friend but she's changed schools and they don't really speak any more so no great loss.

I have a shotgun stored for a friend whilst he moves house and reinstates his cabinet..... that was the request but that
is now over six months ago.

How long does it take to drill a few holes and screw the cabinet to the wall.
He contacted me last week and I said, "I bet you're asking when its convenient to pick up your gun arent you?"

" oh no" he says " haven't got around to fitting the cabinet yet, do you have a slim walled 16mm spanner I can borrow?"

Umm..... friend or user comes to mind?

That's frustrating, I changed the locks the day I moved in, my delay on cabinet instalation was waiting on delivery, and then a somewhat complex instalation.

It was done in 17 days!

I'd be right miffed if someone took 6 months!

I am looking at moving in a few weeks- first job is to get cabinets off the walls and fitted in new house the same day- got 4 to do 🙈
Same here. Would have had them done same day but we didn't get keys until 4m30pm so it was about midnight by the time we finished and the bairn needed to go to bed. Van returned by 8am next morning, and cabinets fitted by 9.30 👍. Feo was more than happy with that too.
