Weihrauch HW66 - not as accurate as I was hoping!

vermin, but they dont class fox as vermin, iv had all sorts of discussions with them about this, north yorkshire fox are vermin and can be controlled with rimfire, and as i said to them, i can be on a farm on the border and shoot fox with rimfire and another field and im not allowed, they had no answers other than, "thats how it is"
was the fox shot with the 22lr 80 yards though
im not saying its wrong, not at all, more the fact its a joke how things differ from place to place, like in scotland you can shoot roe with a 223, but not here,

We have shot 100’s of rounds through his hw66 on the same bit on land so know it well, crazy they won’t let you use .17HMR for foxing

How did you get on? I had the thumbhole version for a couple of years and it shot really well with SK / Lapua. Found this thread as I was considering getting another one in 17hmr.

To be honest have not had the time to test it further, we are soon moving and packing etc has taken up all my time, that and work
Was considering selling it which would be a shame, but may try some quality ammo through it before I make up my mind. They are very well engineered rifles and the trigger is a joy. I would still recommend them or an Anschutz 1417.

Thanks for the response, once I am moved and settled will definitely give that a try.
we don’t bother with eleys definitely give the CCI Subsonics a go
We find the CCI stingers are excellent indoor but outside get moved around easily

I have a HW66, and yes it is very well engineered. However the same cannot be said for the .22 sub sonic hp ammunition.
The only round I had any joy with was Winchester subs, when they were in the large box with the plastic insert. I have tried all manufacturers. I also chroned many of them.
In my rifle Norma were the worst for accuracy and had a huge variation in ftps.
The new Winchester rounds in the small box where they are stored nose to tail, (so to speak), are also shockingly bad. Aguila, Cci, and Ely subs are usable. By that I mean they are generally good enough to head shoot Rabbits out to 80m, beyond that I'd likely go for chest shots. They would certainly be useless fo target shooting.
Match ammo is very different. I have used several brands and not found a bad one.
It is however twice the price.
It's a shame they are not so good for hunting.
My go to for all Rabbit and Squirrels is my AA S510 .22 FAC. Firing AA Field 16grn at 890ftps.
Its accurate and will out shoot any .22 LR rimfire that I've shot. Pellet on Pellet at 50m and depending on other variables good to over 100m.
If I can't get close, I'd go for my .17hmr or .204 Ruger.
In summary, it does not matter how good the engineering of a rifle is, if the ammunition is junk.

Just saw this thread, how are you getting on now? My hw66 is very ammo fussy. The most accurate are eley match and sk flat nose (which is sadly discontinued). I actually ended up glass and pillar bedding the stock as is the fit was a little bit sloppy. That really sharpened things up and wasn't too bad to do on that action.Afternoon,
I recently purchased a used Weihrauch HW66 in .22lr, I remember the brand from my air rifle days in the 70's and 80's and they were always well made and accurate, plus I had read some good reviews about them and people often mentioned their accuracy. Sadly I am struggling on the accuracy front, my old CZ 452 was the proverbial tack driver at 35m, but with the Weihrauch I am getting groups over an inch across with the odd flyer. I have tried it with and without the moderator on with no change. So far I have tried RWS Target and Blazer ammo through it, I may try CCI or Eley Sport next week when I am at the club along with cleaning the barrel. I just wondered if anyone else has had similar experiences with these rifles and what their solution was. Thanks for any advice in advance
