What’s better than a .270?

7mm PRC sounds/reads like a good allrounder, waiting for the European rifle makers to adopt it, they are taking an age.
It is a good one. The American makers have gotten on board with it and the other PRC offerings. I agree that the European makers seem slow to adopt the newer offerings with regard to chamberings. It does everything the long proven 7mm Rem Mag can do plus use the longest high BC bullets available right out of the box. And there’s no belt which is nice.

Barrels are like tyres and condoms…
Consumable and only fun if you use them properly

Cant say I am too worried
This came to me second hand, former owner on here!!
Seen god know how many before me and at least 3-400 since I got it

Easiest rifle I have ever shot to 1000+

Dare I say it ….better than my 300 Norma…I feel dirty just saying that….
 whoever had fun with a condom on..... Jeeeez !

Well folks, I’ve had a .270 for maybe 15 years. It just works.

I have used a few of the usual calibers apart from maybe .308.

Did convince the old man to get a Swede, slightly loopy compared to what I’d like. But inside 200 all fairly academic, still in kill zone anyway etc.

I’ve had a new rifle craving for a while now. I can’t seem to find anything that does better for flat ish trajectory and reloading availability etc than the .270.

I realise no bullet is gravity resistant but I am much more of a .17hmr than .22lr guy even within .22 distances if that gives you an idea of my style. I like a point and shoot.

I have considered a .30-06. But to get similar sort of trajectory, it was like 165 grain and most folk seem to shoot 180s? Doesn’t seem that efficient either.

The .25-06 sounds appealing but actually no advantages over what I have. And probably less ammo selection even for reloading.

.308, probably more ‘loopy’?

6.5PRC may be an option? But is it just more faff? A new .270 barrel (which won’t kill me more deer) may feel like a new gun.

I’ll be honest, the Swede the old man has would put factory federal into the same hole,(with myself shooting) but I’ll only get 3/4” with the same rifle in .270 and I don’t think it’s a recoil issue. Maybe it’s just not quite the right bullet choice. Would the .30 cals be naturally a little more accurate?
Another 270 👍

277 Fury. Still get to keep your 270 bullets, but turbocharge them.

Semi-serious. It is likley a new standard chambering for the US military, and the SIG Cross looks like a fun gun to own and shoot. If the military fully adopts it then there will be plenty of brass available.

That’s an interesting one. High pressure rounds may be the wave of the future. 7mm Backcountry is another that’s just come out that will be interesting to watch.

The 7x57. Jack O’Connor raved about the “new” 270 as he earned his living writing about it. But he preferred the 7x57, but there was no money in promoting a German cartridge from the end of the previous century in gun magazines aimed at American audiences in the 1940’s and 50’s.

grew up on .270
was a perfect point and shoot
never not owned one

what's better?
6.5-284! picked one up used an can't see past it now
147gr ELDM at 130gr 270 velocities (the .270 is perfect with 130gr but runs out of steam very quickly when you run 150gr
Less perceived recoil
Significantly more accurate at range

all this with 10-15% less powder

Or a 6.5 PRC.

That’s all very well edd but you’re 284’s a barrel burner… 800-1000 rounds sometimes as early as 700. Of course that’s depending on ammunition type, barrel quality and your cleaning routine.
As for the range creep in a little closer.

Buck.

Its not
No more than a 270
52gr of powder through a 264
56-60gr through a .277

Am well over 7-800 rounds on this barrel
And whatever it had through it before
Borescope shows no more or less than any other rifle
These are not long shot strings
I dont clean other than a patch every now and then until its had a decent number of rounds through it

I shoot targets as well
1100m steel range west of Edinburgh

One rifle for all

Rumours of its early demise are much exaggerated…
