I don’t think the “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear” argument will ever be a good reason to harvest data on the way the likes of Palantir or Cambridge Analytica have in the past.

Even the most mundane personal information can be used to discriminate or persecute people in the wrong hands.

That’s not necessarily true. There have been numerous instances where past, completely legal and innocent behaviour has lead to persecution by new governments. That is the issue.

Next thing will be that in order to renew, you need a digital ID, which also gives the govt and hmrc full access to your bank details and likely monthly csv file transfers for their AI to analyse if you are conforming.

HMRC already has full access to your bank accounts....including powers to help themselves to your money.
