Sporting rifle too much overseas hunting !!!!!!

I was lent a 12 month stack a while ago when I did my back in and was confined to barracks, I went through the whole lot whilst the mrs watched an episode of strictly come dancing! Flick through the identical adds, find somthing worth reading (rarely) read it look at more identical adds, onto next month repeat! When I were a boy I used to buy airgun world religiously, couldn't wait to get home and read what Arthur Shepard and Mark Jobling were up to, that never seemed anything like as dull. Mind you I was only young, lots of things didn't seem dull back then I spose

Just curious as to the way Sporting Rife is going , only a couple of years ago it was more about stalking and hunting in the UK. Now it seems to be Africa and various other locations that are well out of the price bracket of most shooters . I must admit I enjoy getting some quality meat for the freezer , and don't see the sporting challenge sat over a huge dead hippo with its mouth propped open with a stick so the guy in the photo can look proud as punch . Lets get back to some UK shooting , wether it be stalking , foxing ratting with an air rifle or bunny bashing with a rimmy. All the best Joe

It looks as if the Editors are deep in the pocket of the sponsors (advertisers) that is how the world of business works, like it or not. Hence the aggressive promotion of Swarovski optics, Blazer rifles and lately of NV and FLIR equipment. We are spoon-fed luke-warm diarrhea when it comes down to "Brand X = Success in the field" - just try to see through that and don't fall for it and enjoy the hunting stories, they are not all that bad.

Well someone finally nailed it it's the old boys network Sponsors are looking after the one who shout about their products loud enough that's why Peter Carr is the editor just look where he has been all over the world shooting on the back of all the suppliers.
Its not for his presentation and journalist skills that's for sure.
BASC used to be the same when Swift was there jobs for the boy's all over again
I stopped buying the Sporting Rifle a year ago full of repeat ****

All magazines, from Model Railway, Crotchet International etc. to Shooting Times make their money from advertising. The subscription paid/cover price does NOT cover the cost of the business.

Advertising is what fills the pages, just grow up and get used to what has been the normality in all Publications for the past quarter century. Business is business, it's what pays the mortgage.

Take what you can from the contributors articles. It's "the slag everything off" attitude that stops people contributing.

If you don't like any magazine then stop buying it. If you drag it down then we all end up with nothing.

Interesting views on the post I started , shame SPORTING RIFLE has come to what kit they re using , such as a six grand rifle and a three and a half grand scope , using a .338 llapua magnum on a fox at a hundred yards !!,,, Let's get back to us normal shooters guys , stalking in the UK , perhaps air rifle hunting or some bunny bashing by NORMAL people . When it started off as a quarterly magazine I think it was , it was far more interesting , it's been milked to the nth degree now , and articles on some toft shooting leopard in Zimbabwe don't interest me and a lot of my shooting colleagues ! Lets get back to what we do in the UK , and that's enjoying our stalking , and vermin control . And watch that price it ll be a fiver before you know it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW one doesnt get the prize over 42 others if not half good at ones job.

Sporting Rifle editor-in-chief Peter Carr has beaten a field of 42 international journalists to take home the Zeiss Sports Optics Journalist of the Year award.

The award was presented for his conservation work in Sporting Rifle, which has seen over £25,000 raised for the charity Save the Rhino over three years.
The funds have funded vital anti-poaching efforts at uMkhuze game reserve in South Africa and Big Game Parks in Swaziland.
Mr Carr, who also holds the editorship on Modern Gamekeeping magazines and a dual presenter-director role on The Shooting Show, said: “It was the first time in my life I have been lost for words, but I accepted this award on behalf of all of you who have supported this initiative, the other hunting journalists present, and the Blaze Publishing team, who have believed in this fundraiser from its outset. I sincerely cannot thank you enough.”

I love my stalking and other shooting I do and wouldn't change a thing! it may be a age thing, but every time I watch the shooting shower (pardon the pun) I would skip the introw (AND AGAIN) and watch the bits I like, I find mister Carr far too smug for my liking, perhaps he needs to visit his roots. but then again,I will just cancel the SR and have done with it.
p.s.
Bring back the stalking magazine, now that was good!

There used to be a great stalking magazine a few years ago, lots of real articles a few ads etc. can't remember the name.....maybe stalking magazine! Anyway, was well worth the read.

Actually, correction. This site is a really good source of info and it's where I get my regular fix from for all things deer. And it's free...! The editorial is unbiased...well mostly...and it covers a range of topics. Why shell out a fiver for a magazine when there is a better on line version.?

I gave up on it a couple of years ago after a series of articles fawning over the catapult skills of a man who I knew to be a lifelong serial poacher/courser/thorn in the side of many keepers. Any mag. idolising a toe-rag like that wont get my cash!!

Harsh words my friend,
yes it's true there is a lot recycled stuff, but there is on many other shooting magazines,
some of the articles are a bit obscure,
but there is no other dedicated stalking publication,
I am not a fan of Mr Carr, and think he is not someone who I would like as a friend.
so what other stalking mags are they're?

My opinion of Zeiss has just taken a dive. It seems that they no longer care whom they support.
Not sporting rifle or the shooting show..... As someone else mentioned mr Carr may not have the presenting skills of some, but who would you rather front a shooting programme, someone who actually shoots ( paid, invited, sponsors jolly or whatever) or some tit with a media degree who has no connection to the sport whatsoever? And before anyone says it I have no connection to mr Carr, never even met the man. But as already said there is not much else on offer be it magazine or internet tv show, so make the most of it and pick the bones out of it that you are interested in reading/watching.
and let's face it how many of us given the chance would not like to be in mr carrs position of editing/presenting such publications travelling the would to hunt and using/being given the best kit on the market? Anyone who says they would needs some paxo shoving up they're ricker?....

merry christmas anyhow!

There is no advertising or product placement within any of the Grays Sporting Journal articles. Sports Afield manages to draw a very good balance. Rifle/Handloader are good for technical content.

Sporting Rifle caters for an entirely different audience that is interested in the latest kit - but I'm not really part of it.

And in which newsagents can we purchase these Journals?

I reckon "our" sport only needs a quarterley that is pure text. You will, however, have to pay in order to get contribution of writers. Most only have a few articles in them. You then, after a few years, run out of new material.

The reason the old journals stopped was down to lack of new material and a small customer base not willing to pay the going rate.

As an example, our local village rag is FREE only because of adverts. All "articles" are the various Parish Council minutes plus church service timings and an editorial. All the non advertising stuff is available on the Public Noticeboards.

No real difference to any paid fir magazine really.

I stopped when I very nearly got ripped off on my first stalk. Besides who needs a magazine when you have th stalking directory and unlimited internet usage on a phone.

I'll be honest, I don't know the ins & outs of what has/hasn't been done over the years by this individual, but why hasn't someone just phoned the Police and had him taken him to court for fraud?

Seems like a Class Action (if that's possible against an individual?) would sort the problem out, given all the issues that seem to have stacked up...

.............Noted all the comments, but there are very few magazines and publications available that support such a minority sport such as rifle shooting. There will always be some repetitive articles and as someone has noted earlier, there are newcomers to the sport.

A magazine that I thought was just the ticket for fieldsport followers was Countrysport. Can anyone remember it? The editor was Crawford Little and it specialised in Rod, Rifle and Gun. It must be nearly thirty years ago since it folded. There was always something worthy to read in each monthly publication. I wish it could come back...........

Happy New Year everyone from Donsider, Scotland ..hic!!!!!!!
