243 fazination???

Sorry - I'll clarify.

When I said most police forces are reluctant to grant .308 as a first rifle or if your land only had roe on it, that can be generalised to ANY cartridge over .243. Yes, there is little or no logic to it, but that's the way it is.

If you were to ask for 7x57, you'd be met with horror, since in their minds there is little difference between that and 7mm Rem Mag.

I'm not defending this - but those are the constraints we have to work with.

Quite simple actually. I used the word "Deer" in reference to the group of animals as a whole while using "Roe" to speak directly of a species.

SS

Still not making sense Marcbo.
there are two additional species of deer in the uk which are smaller than Roe. They can be legally shot with .22cf and a .243 is eminently suitable for all 3 of these smaller species of DEER.

Yeah, I had this when I spoke to my FO regarding a 7mm-08. All he hears is "seven" and gets all wild-eyed. And he wasn't interested in any clarifications either. In the end I gave up and got a .308.

On the other hand, I'll bet many FOs would lump the 25-06 in with the .243....

Cheers,
Jeff.

My first centrefire is a 45-120 because Cartridges of the World has it at 2000 ft-lbs, same as a .243....with blackpowder.

My my feo is extremely helpful mind :)

 It's hard to tell out there in some places - the men, women and the kids all have that Pat Sharpe mullet hairdo......

FUN HOUSE ! it's a whole lotta fun .......prizes to be won........use your body and ya brain if you wanna play the game!
If MARCBO went on fun house he'd probably win a .243 .........................get it? win a .243?

He's obsessed..........there are 280+ replies on this thread, I reckon 200 of them are MARCBO

Are you implying our esteemed colleague is really a 14 year old girl?

You may be onto something!

No, not at all.

There is a psychological concept known as "reaction formation". We would recognise it as the saying of Hamlet's mother as in "the lady doth protest too much, methinks". It is a classic defence mechanism, whereby someone displays the opposite emotion - often to extremes - to the one they are really feeling.

A hypothetical example:

Sub-consciously I'd like a .243. But because I know some of my peers and colleagues stigmatise those who use a .243 I'm going to rubbish the .243. In fact I won't just rubbish it, I'll say how the only people who have 243's are kids and women, just to make clear to everyone that I think men who use a .243 are somehow inadequate. Heck, I'll go even further and say that anyone who has a .243 is not even a real man! After all, a real man would have a real rifle. Yeah, those men using .243's are probably limp-wrested, that's it. Now my sub-conscious knows that can't be true - since clearly not all 243's are used by kids and women, even in America - but hopefully rubbishing them proves to those same peers and colleagues that I'd certainly never be seen dead with a .243. All this, even though accepting that I might actually like a 243 if I gave it a try is probably the one thing that would help me with all that anxiety in the first place.

It has its detractors, of course, but as soon as you give the concept any credence (and it was coined by an American after all) you can't then help wondering about that fixation with pink underwear.....

It could also be, & most probable, that the OP just doesn't like the 243 win.

After reading the above quoted post the first thought was, this is "projection". Now please don't "act out" or "regress".

Just so you can think about it, this is classic "parapraxis" also.

 Excellent! Just when I thought the thread was throttling downhill it's suddenly got highbrow - magnificent save by W-G and Sharkey there - perhaps we can have some informed love for the .243 to redress the balance.....?

by the way, I had to google parapraxis - I never knew it was Latin for 'American Cross-Dressing' - amazing what you learn on here......

I'm buying a 243 ..........but no pink undies , I'm more of a fish net kinda guy . And the only thing I'm projecting will be vomit if this thread goes on any longer .

As mungo just said police force in this country are very reluctant too give you something they don't think you really need. If it was that easy every one would have 308 and .243 and posdible alot more. But they dont allow it. Im in that situation myself. He said 308 is too much gun for just shooting roe deer. If i had red deer stalking no problem. So i opted for .243, simply because its easy on shoulder, good selection of ammo and it knocks roe down easily. And will do the job it i get to too reds. Perfect for whatni want.

there , fixed that for you ! what experience does your FEO/police have that qualifies them to make that decision ?

He doesnt have any. My dad has .308 for the same uses as myself. Just roe and the occasional red. But when i enquired, because i thought get 308 easier to share reloading gear i was told its not the best choice until i have some ground with red on it. Mayb because ive only had my cert for 10 years i dont know. I will ask again, i have plenty lamd for it so problem there. I just wasnt argueing too much with feo, just keep the peace and tbh i was quite happy anyways. .243 more than fine for what i need.
