.22 Hornet

I know this isn’t a deer cartridge, but what are peoples thoughts on them. I’ve found a nice old rifle with this chambering and I’m quite tempted for a bit of vermin control around the farm instead of a .17hmr. Ignoring practicalities, what do people think?

It’s good out to 200y but beyond that it does get a bit loopy, and it probably wouldn’t be my first choice in a howling gale either.

Cheap to reload for as you only use about 10-12gn of powder a pop so a tub goes a long way.

It’s a great cartridge I think - it’s an HMR on steroids and not far off 1000ft/lb of muzzle energy. Does a cracking number on foxes and squirrels, and if it was legal it would make a great munty cartridge as well I reckon.

It apparently used to be very popular pre deer act, but that legislation put it on the back burner a bit.

I like it. Haven’t used one much, but hopefully that will change quite soon. It looks like a superb small game round - perfect for hares perhaps and foxes. Actual terminal effect will depend on choice of bullet.

I know an Austrian gentleman who uses an open sighted rook rifle sleeved to 22 Hornet who uses it on marmots, black grouse and capercaillie in the Alps.

used one for many many years on mainly foxes out to 100 mtrs it’s perfect for that and head shot rabbits
I love the hornet as a no recoil, low noise calibre and very accurate

100 mtrs is a long way and at night with nv it’s bang on the money and very useful piece of kit nothing not to like to be honest, looking now to have the barrel cut down on one of mine to have a short barreled truck rifle

A sleeved rook rifle would be the dream. Your Austrian friend is a man of taste.

Handy little gun to have, I use mine a lot, cheap to load for, and mine is accurate.
The guy I brought it from is kicking himself for selling it to me, he had sold his Brno .22 Hornet truck gun as he started to use his .222rem for an everyday tool, but he was offered an Annie for nothing by someone that wanted it away for health reasons, I ended up having this gun. Best purchase I've made in ages, Good for 150, I have trimmed foxes up to just shy of 200. Fun caliber.

Cracking little round, wish I had never sold mine, reloading is the way forward, many factory offerings can be rather pedestrian, Hornady 35 gn vmax is excellent, but not cheap, get one, you will love it.

I binned my HMR off in favour of a .22 Hornet not long after I started shooting. In my opinion it's the best thing you'll ever do.

The CZ527 is probably the best you'll get, they're well known for accuracy. I cut my barrel down to 18" and used it with 35gr V-Max home loads - I shot everything from mice to humane dispatch deer and it worked perfectly.

Neck size the brass and use a Lee factory crimp die if you home load.

Love mine ! However its going to be an issue with none toxic. regarding mag length and twist rate . A CZ hornet and most are 1-16 twist
Considering my options especially as i can down load the 223 , perhaps i will buy a 17 hornet barrel ? Other than that i suspect it will be sold if its a lead use ban and not a lead selling ban ( because i have a lot of bullets)
