I went the 308 route after looking at many others when I started. I discounted the 25-06 on several grounds which included:
1. nothing is flat shooting and at most distances I shoot dear at (within 200m...if I can't stalk to at least that I will rarely take the shot) there is no hardship in allowing a 3 inch drop at 200m in 308 for 100 yd zero, or point and shoot to 200m with 1" high at 100 zero and it's not that much less in 25-06. It's more at 300m but still easy to hold over a little for;
2. Barrel life. You'll get 4 times or more barrel life from the 308 in moderate loads
3. Ammo availability...everywhere stocks 308
4. Bullet choice.
If I were to pick one "do it all" rifle now and only have one rifle it would be the 6.5CM. Less wind drift than the 25-06 with a 140 pill driven at 2600fps than a 110gr from the 25-06 driven much harder and this matters as much as drop. Better barrel life too. I've since bought one and it has its place in the gun cab. 6.5 x 55 great too but a bit less efficient. CM brass now widely available for reloaders.
