45/70 for stalking

Always fancied a Springfield until I picked one up! They are quite heavy.
AB, have you ever loaded one with a ball or done a light load? Something for fun or small game?
Sorry brother , I missed this post somehow . I have loaded round ball in 45/70s , and 458WMs as well . Never in lever guns though . In the Ruger No1 and No3 I did it a number of times , but eventually settled on hard cast 300 gr bullets . They worked well on White-Tails and just chopped a 458 sized hole out of small game . There wasn't any significant meat damage around the entry/exit wounds on either and I didn't have to adjust my hold for different loads/bullets .

I have loaded 457 round balls in the 45-70. The military once had a double ball load as well as a 'gallery' load using the old Ideal #457-130 "button bullet" . Very versatile cartridge. I shoot a 300 grain RCBS GC or the Ideal 330 grain "Gould" bullet. Nothing walks away from a hit with either regardless of how fast they are launched from my Mauser. ~Muir

No experience for deer stalking but it's bloody good fun taking out players in Call of Duty with the 45-70 lever action and open sights 😃

I had a Marlin 1895, 45-70 for a while and loved it.
A 405gr lead bullet "trundling" along at about 1500 fps is nice and manageable, recoil wise, and works a treat (unsurprisingly) on muntjac and roe.
The jacketed bullet loads with N133 were quite "snappy", but didn't get uncomfortable until I started to increase velocity past a certain point.

Sounds wonderful. Could I just ask how many 405gns bullets one gets to the average church roof, please?

Our local court house is covered in evil lead. I've often wondered of the irony....
Now call me old-fashioned but I have to say I just love the thought of the sound of a mega-heavy bullet hitting a deer. In my minds eye I keep seeing that awfully well-built chappie striking that massive gong (younger members - ask your grandad) at the start of each (I think) Rank movie film. As it turned out the sodding thing was papier mache - another damned childhood memory consigned to the dustbin of disillusionment…..

Yep. Give me a big bullet making two holes anyday. Works with a huge range of powders and brass lasts ages.
In a single shot you don't even need a press or does!

Anybody ever go to the 1 mile high x 1mile long shoot in Colorado with any lever action, preferred gun seemed to be 45/70, hitting 45 gallon drums, we were all planned to go but the road got washed out.

Never heard of it. ~Muir

First Roe doe of the season:

Took the Cyber-punk 45-70 Marlin GSBL and grassed a tasty deer (and a fox for good measure.)

First sight of the Roe:

Need to get closer:

Stalked in to 75m:

Watched this male while I waited for a chance to move on the doe:

Job done; she dropped where she stood:

My 45-70 load: 460gr Mjöllnir cast bullet:

It didn't even rain!

Looks good job. What bullet are you using? I’ve just joined the "45/70" stalking club. My intention is short range woodland stalking.
