A message to BASC...

How do you know that he's in the minority? You really need to get your blinkers off because you clearly don't have the slightest clue about this deer management lark. Just because you only shoot a handful of deer a year doesn't mean that we all do.
Sorry mate , didnt realise all the firearms owners in the UK ALL shoot deer on a regular basis
Try reading what I actually said.
if I couldn't sell game on to dealers I would be stuffed.
Yes , you wouldnt be able to shoot would you , Jesus Christ !
Now I appreciate that you will come back that you shoot millions but give them all away but that's just Horlicks and we all know it!
Well that escalated quickly :p
You don't pay for anyone to represent shooting so IMO you have a brass neck to expect BASC to do anything for you. You can bleat all you like but unless you support shooting through your pocket then you're backing Packham IMO.
No I dont expect BASC to do anything , I used to , because they said they did , 'voice of shooting' and all that.... But I dont get disappointed these days now......Any how cant talk , I need to send a donation off to Wild Justice , and my idol Packers o_Oo_Oo_O

The supermarkets and large butcher chains couldn't give a damn about the shooting market, it's insignificant. You abide by their rules or get lost.
If the supermarkets ever do decide to push venison and game prepare for an even bigger hit on UK shooting, game dealers, shoots and stalkers will be unable to keep up with demand and I predict the demand being met by both game and venison intensively farmed to keep up, and more likely imported with lower welfare standards

Where did anyone say that all firearms owners shoot deer on a regular basis? However, see below!
You are in a slightly different position to most other shooters though, your livelihood depends on selling game, you are a minority.
There you go.
You said it. You are a minority. Where are your stats to prove that statement? It's a massive industry and people who run shoots or shoot more than just for their own freezer rely on dealers. Maybe not entirely but shoot a red hind calf and follower and then find the time to process and then sell them yourself.

Err , I was being sarcastic , hence the

OK , Ill break it down for you nice and simple.
160,000 sec 1 FAC s in the UK
567,000 sec 2 SGCs

A total of 586,000 firearms cert holders of both types , as some have both.
Now , how many of those shoot deer , AND sell to game dealers ?
There needs to be more than 284,000 to make my statement untrue (discount the SEC 2 s if you like , so more than 80000), but in reality, there is likely 3 - 5000 at a guess.
So people who shoot deer and sell to game dealers are a MINORITY.

Do you want to argue with that ?

If only we had an organisation that could unite us.... I used to think that organisation was BASC, but all they are interested in (at its core) are their own interests , and it will become apparent as time goes on.
Become apparent as time goes on. You would have to be deaf blind and stupid if you have not realised by now. 20 years ago I thought BASC was the organisation to represent us all.
But as it has been said on this thread so many times they are not representing it members and doing what THEY THINK THE MEMBERS WANT.

Oh yes, the old "I was being sarcastic" Also known as the lowest for of wit!
Yes, just as a politician would put it, 49% is a minority. However that minority certainly shoot the majority of the deer and by some enormous margin at that! Basically, we're the important ones when it comes to managing the deer population of this small island. The freezer fillers are part of the problem as they preserve overly high densities which constantly leak out onto the managed land. However, that's another thread entirely!

You're an extremely angry man 😉

OK, let me get this straight, are you saying just shy of half the sec 1 holders, thats nearly 80000 people, shoot deer and sell to game dealers on a regular basis?

Because that's not only bonkers, but delusional bonkers.
I would wager not that many have the appropriate calibres or licence condition. 🤔

@Rewulf I have reported you for that previous comment. You're not worthy of this site. Hopefully that will be the last we hear from you! There are certain things that everyone knows you don't type on a public forum. Get a grip of yourself!

Well, when I first heard BASC were dropping the Legal cover I was pretty incensed, andas it turns out so were many on here, I declined to renew my membership when the time came bearing in mind I had been a member for years.
However, I have recently re-joined and stuck my hand in my pocket, my reasons are simple, as a few have realised, like it or not BASC are very good at PR so if I can get them to put out the message I want (and of course others) then it will be picked up in the media and hopefully distributed widely. However the main reason I re-joined was that I saw first hand just how hard Bill Harriman works on behalf of all of us, the man really does deserve a medal for the work he puts in. Yes, he is not perfect, who is? But you simply cannot argue with the effort he gives to his job, without people like Bill we are screwed!

What for saying bonkers 🤣
Are you going to at least admit you don't really know what you're talking about?

Or do you still think there's 80000 shooters going about culling deer on a regular basis, and selling to game dealers?
I suppose reporting me is better than admitting you're wrong eh?

News to me that silly statement. Nobody got a chance to support anybody over the pistol ban. The govt just banned them no argument.
I was there for Countryside March along with many shooters, I even flew back to the UK for it. The pistol bans came in two parts, full bore / centre fire and then later rimfire. Before the bans and in between many of us lobied our MP's and tried to muster support but I don't remember other countryside sports and even some shooting sports giving us support as we'd given them. Sad, but we seem just as divided today.

Theyre a charity concerned with the welfare of deer. Why would they ‘campaign’ for shooting?

Youll just get more out of membership as a stalker than you would BASC
Presumably you are referring to the BDS who also run courses to kill deer - deer welfsre?
The BDS need stalkers to exist who in turn nedd FAC's who in turn need representstion to defend their sport and certificates. Bit short sighted of BDS to ignore their members basic requirements and if there was any organisation set up for its clique management it's the BDS.

BASC did not propose a lead ban. The lead ban came solely from the food industry, who are supplied by the game dealers of who'm many had no option but to insist game is shot with non-toxic ammunition.
And for those...very very many...who shoot what they eat and do not and have never sold to game dealers or anyone else? The person who walks up hoping for a bird for the pot or the person helping control woodpigeons? They can presumably go hang can they?

This is BASC throwing shooting folk under the bus to protect the huge amount of members' money it has punted to the British Game Alliance justification for excessive bags (birds per hectare vs natural density/capacity of the land to hold those birds) on the spurious grounds that what is shot is sold as food.

There was no need for BASC to promote this "ban" on lead shot as vis-a-vis game actually sold to game dealers it would have been self policing and with game retained by the shooter his or her eating of lead shot game would have been at their own risk.

The BDS has always been a quandary to me,
They promote towards the shooter to get his money but then when things get a tad hot, hoist the white flag an pull the we're a deer welfare charity card..

Very simple. Culling needs to occur to manage the welfare of the species, avoid overpopulation and either starvation in winter or drive landowners to use less than humane methods such as driven on to shotguns, which used to happen.

They dont ignore their members basic requirements, it isnt a gun club, its a charity.

The freezer fillers like myself could also be perfectly happy to just fill their freezer an keep a balance from the odd farm local to them that has a small population of deer.
I work full time. Train, an have run in comps with my GSPs which takes time to train to that level. If i get out once every 2 or 3 weeks and average half a dozen or so deer for myself an family im doing ok an it certainly doesn't make you a superior to me..
Jimmy.
