BASC Interpretation of yesterday's speech & Stalking

They have, as have the NGO.
It's the f**kwits at police H.Q's who have difficulty understanding plain English when it suits. :banghead:
Agree, it truly is time for a major shake up in the way firearms licensing departments are operated and managed in this country.

Just shows that even police officers make bad judgements sometimes.
Just carry on it's absolutely clear and straight forward to most of us. I just wish those dozy barstewards in Cardiff and Edinburgh would see it the same way.
I’d rather have another couple of weeks of lockdown than get back now but potentially have another lockdown in a few weeks time!
I don’t always agree with the SNP but in this case I’m happy to go along with their assessment.
Just think how you would feel if because of your haste to get out and about another person dies but more importantly it’s your relative, would you be happy with that on your conscience?
Or do you just not care?

I would say it's discrimination if fishermen, golfers etc are allowed to crack on but shooting not

Good morning,

Unfortunately there was nothing in the government guidance around recreational shooting. The only sports specifically mentioned were golf and fishing. As such, until further guidance is published, recreational shooting may still be seen as a breach of the COVID regulations

This really annoys me. The wording in the 50 page guidance doc was:

For example, this would include angling and tennis.

There's somewhere else that the Culture Secretary referenced golf, fishing, basketball and golf. These are examples NOT a definitive list. Sitting with a fishing rod is no different from sitting in a highseat with a rifle.

Some people commenting above have possibly hit the nail on the head. Some constabularies/officers do not like people having any kind of gun and will do anything they think they might get away with to prevent/deter people from legitimately using them. They also know that, even if they don't have legitimate powers to do what they are trying to do, they can probably secure a substantial degree of compliance with their demands just because many shooters will be concerned by the possible revocation/renewal consequences of getting caught, with all the consequential uncertainty that may ensue.

The position taken in BASC's statement yesterday now should be matched by the legal expense insurers saying they'll cover the costs of any challenges to constabularies playing silly games against their insured parties when undertaking legitimate shooting activities. I'm not going to hold my breath until that happens though!

Just e-mailed BASC to check if it would be ok to drive from Cardiff to Somerset for stalking, no reply yet.

Think they will say you must comply with the Welsh lockdown rules and stay local, so a no, just like we cannot travel from England to wales.

As long as you can get over the Severn bridge you will be O.K. but you will be committing and offence whilst travelling in Wales. :cuckoo:
A crazy situation caused by devolved governments flexing their muscles just because they can or to be difficult because they belong to a different political party.

I'm partly in agreement with you Eddie. However the longer that we stay in the present lockdown situation the more likely it is that people will treat it with contempt and start ignoring it. It's all about limiting the risk and allowing people to get out in the countryside on their own either fishing, shooting or even golfing (if that's your perversion) and should have very little increased impact on the risk. Besides that it will provide great benefits to mental health.

P.S.
I don't know if anyone watched it on the T.V. last night but if you haven't have a look on BBC iplayer for the last episode of Critical. It's a documentary about the Royal Gwent hospital in Newport. I couldn't help but get emotional about the super human efforts being made by all the staff to treat patients in critical care suffering from the virus. You can only have total and the utmost respect and admiration for the totally unselfish work that all the staff are carrying out under war like conditions. It certainly brought a lump to my throat.

The issue is that the government are basically saying use your common sense which for the most part is fair enough. The issue with shooting is that we've all got tickets that are hard to get and easy to lose, so yet again and for the eleventy billionth time the shooting community is being caught in the crossfire.

If someone doesn't have any or does't trust themselves to make a sensible choice and instead ask someone else's opinion and they say no then you can't moan about it. Once you have asked and been told no then its hard to go out and justify why you are out vs using common sense to interpret the guidance (and it is guidance and nothing specifically mentions shooting) and explain why if in the highly unlikely event anyone stops you. We're adults and have been given discretion and the guidance to follow, if some

Of course an organisation is going to err on the side of caution and say either no or at best (like Sussex) "its not our remit to decide, just follow the guidance". Why would they say yes when they don't know for definite themselves and its so low down on the list of priorities they're hardly organising meetings to discuss people going deer stalking. I bet most FLDs (like all organisations) are working on skeleton crews, working from home and struggling with just their usual business of renewals and working out how to keep people with certificates while visits aren't being completed, if there are any staff spare they'll be utilised elsewhere where they are really needed, not parenting certificate holders who can't make a decision for themselves.

As long as you are abiding by the conditions on your certificate then it is not for the FLD to say when you can go out. Would you call them and ask if you should go out if you had a cold, a sprained ankle, if it was raining heavily? I seriously hope not and you'd make a decision based on common sense. Sorry for a bit of a rant but we can hardly complain that FLDs and the Police are overstepping their boundaries and powers when we are asking them for permission for things we are fully capable of deciding ourselves.
