Wanted: Bavarian Mountain Hound Puppy

Hi everyone. I’m desperately searching for a BMH puppy, or for a breeder with imminent plans of a litter.

I’ve had various people not get back to me on pet advertising websites.

They seem to be extremely difficult to obtain. Having lost my eldest dog in February, I am desperate to rekindle the same bond I had with him again.

Please, if someone knows of any leads then get in touch.

Thank you very much

There was a litter in the classified section a few weeks ago. And they do appear reasonably regularly. I would suggest searching for those and talk to them directly.

There are not many BMH’s in the UK, and there are a few that are “definitely not” for working.

There is one that I occasionally see here inn Edinburgh and its owner had no clue of what they are designed for, nor did the breeder whom he bought it from - I suspect that many of the “Internet ones” may be such breeders.

There a few on SD who are serious about their working BMH’s, are breeders but will select the owners to whom they sell pups.

Hi Heym, thank you for that. I’ll check the classified out now.

Know exactly what you mean! Thankfully I’ve trained many working dogs, admittedly never a BMH, but I’ve done my research thoroughly as always and have absolutely fallen in love with the idea of having one, training one, working one!

Thanks

Just make sure they have a good background pedigree. There were a lot being bred abroad that had issues. We also had a lot of people crossing them with Labs, which in my opinion is ridiculous.
They are very loyal, loving dogs, but can be very head strong, especially the bitches.

Thanks Sikamalc, I will bare that in mind. It was actually a dog I had in mind as I have 2 bitches and as much as I love them and great workers they are, you don’t get the loyal dog that dotes on you!

Just need to try and find one now!

Litters do come up from time to time. I got my current dog of another stalker called Chris Whyke who lives up near Leeds if I remember correctly. You are far better finding a pup from a working home.
Some of the dogs from abroad in the past had skin problems and could have fits, so make sure of the background of the litter.

Definitely don’t want the trauma of importing a pup. I’ve tried reaching out to some breeders on champdogs but they either haven’t got back to me or don’t have any plans of a litter

Shame you missed our litter (October 2023).

I’ll likely be having another litter next year from one of my BMH bitches - send me a message and we can arrange a chat if you like.

With some European breeders they think of us just having puppy farms over here.
Once the breeders get to know you and what you're going to do they are helpfull.
Two of us off SD imported two bitches of another breed from Poland . Another friend got his from Sweden we travelled over to get his dog. The breeders that we got to know and we are still in contact with them .
The breeder to mine is travelling over here to crufts next year and we are meeting up.
Don't discount getting a puppy from Europe
A good breeders will make sure the breed lines are right.

Not like over here brother to sister or cousin to cousin etc
Just for money.
There are good breeders over here
Chad Russell only uses imported semen
from European champion tested sires across his bitches

Foot note
My mate is a member of a German breed group . He paid his money for a couple of years . When he wanted a puppy he contacted the breeders and was met like you with not returning his message .no there are no puppy's avaliable from this litter and no we can not keep the puppy till it can travel to the uk.
The rest of Europe no problem

Whatever you do, don't do (I'm sure you won't) do what a 'friend' of mine did. He met a guy (he'd made contact with on 'tinternet) on a service station somewhere south of Glasgow to collect his BMH pup. Said guy had 'forgotten' the the pups 'papers', (after cash had changed hands ) said he'd post them on.🙄.
Now then, said 'friend' had neither the time nor availability of shooting to provide a BMH with the work required, not to mention the dog training experience needed !
This pup turned out to be the 'weirdest' looking BMH you ever set eyes on.
Those papers never did turn up in the post, and oddly enough the address he'd given was ficticious too !🙄.

Hi Pendle,

Thank you for your thoughts, that is very interesting. I definitely do not want to buy from any old breeder, hence seeking advice on here from those like yourself who can point me in the right direction.
I could look into European breeders but it would be well out of my comfort zone. Only once have I imported a dog to the UK and that was a maremmano for my mother who is Italian and missed keeping them as a child!
Only with solid advice from people like all of you on here could I entertain getting one abroad

Thanks 👍🏻👍🏻

Good thread. Very informative. Thanks for all that.

I will be buying another Lab then, just sounds easier. Hard to find one out a quality bitch though. I have been lucky with the last two so am going to be real picky again.
