Yes, but only legal on wild bore, and there’s non of thoose up here in the North. I’ll be using it for foxhunting.

Its been said but worth another vote for the S&B 8x56. If you can live with fixed mag, there is nothing else.

Then forget about those vintage 7 or 8 x 56. The reticle is way too thick for foxing.
You need either a Zeiss HT or a S&B Polar.
The reticle on the polar is lovely.
Looking to buy a new scope for dusk hunting here in Northern Sweden.
I’m trying to figure out What to buy, prefering second hand, due to the price.
Some of the once I’ve been looking at are:
Zeiss HT 3-12x56
Swarovski z4i 3-12x50
Meopta R1r 3-12x56
Do you guys have any other reccommendations. Please add two, the best and the best value for money.

If you dont want to dial distance, have a illuminated ret or have variable mag the best value low light scope is hands down which ever 8x56 of the big 3 (swaro, s&b or ziess) you can find the cheapest nothing else is going to come close for the money and you will literally be spliting hairs in the proformance of all 3 of those and you will find eithier a s+b or ziess for £250-300 easily
Speaking from experience of scopes I own, my 6-24x50 Swarovski Habicht is very good & has accounted for many deer in the magic hour before & hour after here in the UK. However, the Zeiss 6-24x56 Diavari is in a different class. Can’t say if the same is true for the two models the OP lists but assuming the glass is as good in one as the other then I’d plump for the one with the 56mm objective over the 50mm one.

It may just be me, but the illuminated reticles I’ve seen have a tendency to ’overtake’ the picture of the target, ie when it is non-illuminated I suppose my pupil is opened up to take in all that can be seen, but when the red dot or reticle is activated, of course it stands out very well indeed, but the target it’s meant to be helping to hit becomes rather less distinct, possibly as a result of the light source introduced on top of the image. I think they are very good indeed in low light conditions, but not so much in ‘last light’ conditions, but this has only been my own personal experience, and it’s a personal one, I have a Zeiss HT 6-24/56 illuminated in the toy cupboard too.
I personally prefer the thicker crosshairs of the S+B 8x56, having tried the Zeiss 7x50 but didn’t like it, also have a Zeiss Diatal 8/56 which is also very good, with a similar, thicker type reticle to the S+B; both of them I find have a better reticle (less fine) than the HT6-24/56.

I've been looking at the Steiner 3x12x56 for similar purpose. Anyone got any thoughts on that?

Of those you'vementioned, the Meopta R1 r , fantastic low-light scope, with a fine dot or centre cross illumination on the reticle. It's been updated with the R2r, which according to Richard Utting is even more betterer.
Value for money? I had a Zeiss Duralyt on my foxing rifle and simply couldn't believe how good it was in the dusk.

I shot a lot of fox in my early days with an 8X56 Schmidt and lamp.
The reticle never got in the way of it, if it was covering the fox I knew it was going down. It’s not like you are trying to hit a shoot and see at 300m let’s be realistic here.

On my foxing rifles I use a Zeiss HT 3-12x56 and a S&B Zenith 2,5-10x56. Both are illuminated. I think that the HT is better than the S&B for light gathering and illuminated reticle. I prefer the S&B for the reostat control, numbered settings with an off in between stages. Both are great scopes. I have an equally mad foxing friend who uses a S&B T96 Polar 4-16×56 and is happy with it although he is dabbling in thermal sights now.

Best value low light scope would be a Delta Titanium HD 2.5-15X56 illuminated.
Performance is pretty much on par or equal depending which reviews you listen to but the price is in a different league to all the scopes you have listed.

Should be great. Kahles make good scopes.
