Bigger than 243 but a bit different?

270s are too common and not unusual but probably the best all round big game cartridge, however the 280 is arguably a better cartridge and even more so in Improved form (Brithunter will vouch for that).
Its no where near as popular a cartridge and would be even more unusual if you called it by its alias, the 7mm Express.

Ian.

I would go with a 7mm Creedmore. From an 18" barrel. Just becuase it has a lovely shoulder and similar ballistics to my 7-08. I would shoot 140gr NBT's.

Not seen one in the UK yet. You asked for something different.

7mm Creedmore, is that a 6.5 Creedmore necked up to take a 7mm bullet?

Been reading all the replies with interest - thank you all for your input :-D

Lots to think about and research but a couple in there that definitely appeal... I know heavier bullets were suggested for my 243, but it just doesn't shoot as well with 100 grainers (and hates 105gn) as it does with 90gn, which it will clover leaf all day long - gives a great sense of confidence when you know the rifle is as accurate as that, but we rarely find ourselves under benchrest conditions when out in the field, eh?!

So spending a fortune on a custom rifle to chase a similar level of accuracy just to fire a slightly heavier bullet... Hmmm, doesn't make sense on paper, does it? But like most of these things, it's about "need" not "want"... Or is it the other way around ;)

30-06 would be the logical choice, but it's not "a little diffrent" . A combination of 2 rifles , one in 243 and one in 30-06, is hard to improve for UK and European use. Cheap factory ammo and available worldwide. A 7x64 would be a little diffrent in the UK and very close to the 30-06.

How about .284 win? 7mm bullets and 6.5-284 brass (neck up) both easy enough to get hold of. Can't see it mentioned in 8 pages of responses.... odd ball enough for you?!

Here in unregulated N.Z hunters use just about every thing that goes bang from muzzle loaders to .22magnum rimfires and upwards ..
A big favourite is the .223 , I personaly , have a 6mmTCU (.223 case necked up and blown out ) and use it with 75grain soft point custom projectiles , this is a very accurate round and delivers more enregy than the .223 .. The question is can you deliver the projectile into the kill zone every time you pull the trigger the answer must be if you cant make the shot dont take it . Whether the cartridge of your choice has enough velocity /energy should be secondary to your personal ability , any of the cartridges mention on the thread will get kills or wounds / misses , it's all up to the shooters to be responsible and do their bit

That 6mmTCU sounds a nice cartridge. You could make a really nice trim little rifle using the small Brno / cz action in a rifle with all upweight of 51/2 lbs that should be deer legal all UK species. Just the job for pottering about and getting close in.
