Dog day one.

Dog day one.

With my old dog still in the Vet`s surgery I took his litter sister with me today for a wander I saw one deer only and not much of him either, there was another unseen deer above.
The deer had sussed me and offered very little body to film,I will mention for the umpteenth time "sambar are good at their job" as can be seen in the clip.

For men that like to stare at deer.

Not much more but the narrative is a laugh.

We (bitch and I) headed home, picked up the pup and we went on our normal trap run to four traps set 1 kilometre up hill behind the house. About 300-400 yards from the trap site I was as usual watching the dogs, old bitch listened and looked keen and I thought "ah we might be on here"
Another 100-150 yards higher up the paddock young dog lifted his head and went straight for the bush edge. Lifting the glasses I quickly saw Mr White dancing on the chain 200 yards forward to my left. Dancing on the spot actually as he had on further inspection wound the chain up like a effn pretzel leaving bugger all slack.

Young dog went straight to him and quickly jumped back as the trapped dog let him know he was frigging cranky and by this time I had arrived with the .22 and knocked Mr White off by poking the rifle right too him. He really had that chain wound up super tight around the dead gum limbs.
The bitch and young dog then gave the lifeless body a real towelling too, with a vengeance bordering on hatred. They seemed to be doubly sure in making him pay. As I looked at his gob I could plainly see all of his teeth that were worn down to stumps 7-8mm long and rounded off from bone chewing for years. All canines and all molars rounded like never seen before (me)
He had been ****ing on my dogs patch for years.... lording it over them with his **** telling them who rules the roost.
"Ah so this is the boss dog in my game cam pics that always had the carcase to himself" "with the rest of the pack always in the back ground" I further mused. And evident on gutting him for his bladder as he had some tasty looking fat in the body cavity...... (tasty? joke, fella`s joke).
I have been after him for a long time and he is the heaviest dog that I have taken thus far. A very very solid big headed bastard with all the smarts and cunning to have beaten every human with rifle and trap for years.
The trap itself I had set between the long dried legs of a dead cow a week or so back and then after knocking the young stag the other day I salted the dead cow`s body cavity with gut runners from that deer and pushed them well up into the dessicated hide covered, eaten out skeleton cavity. I placed a 3" bush pole across the legs so a dog stretching even for just a sniff would have to step over the pole and into the trap. He fell for my trap and I am really really pleased that I nailed him.

I took the bitch and pup back to the trap site and keenly observed them, they had a real good sniff about and then the bitch squatted and raised one leg in the squat...ah that means I have a bitch to nail as well. The trap will go back into the same set this arvo. I love days like this! No, there is no glory in the killing of a wild dog,it is more a feeling of accomplishment that the job was done right and a job that needs doing as there are young Angus calves being dropped daily here, further inducement for wild dogs to be here.
Mr White is dirtied up from his own blood,**** and mud,he is far lighter looking than appears in still pics.
Anyway he`s in the tree of doom paying the rent.

Yeh, I wouldn't know how to obscure my number plate for a photo either but I don't have a dead dog. Have to think of something else, Teresa May perhaps?

Totally irrelevant to the thread mate.

Hoping your Bridget #3 has something for you at the next check.
I am only correcting you guy as many may not know that the BridgeR traps are a well known line.

I am using Jake traps though.

That'll be a few quid towards your old boys vet fee's :thumb:,
Too right JAYB and very welcome too. I sold one of my .300s last week to a mate, the dough is going straight to the Vet. But a bonus is that there are extras in the freezer,I`m not sure how many but there are 6 in the tree @ $720 and I just heard old Berry bitch`s voice going again, I`m hoping for more of course.

Thats one more for the poor old tree, what a life it has lol. john
The Tree of Doom has a fair few assorted bones and skulls and fur pieces in the leaf litter H John.
Frigging wasps got a bit dirty on me when I was hanging him,I am in the process of tracking wasps to nests also..no quarter.!

Hiya John

Great to read of another success in your daily war and that young Hound is coming on good!
Didnt we see a Big-Yellow one in some of your game-cam photos awhile back - just faded more with age?

Thanks for sharing - we just dont have the variety you do!

you must be at it 24-7.
regards Robert.

7 yes Bob,what else does an old bloke do? 24 no.

Yes you would have, this dog even may have been more yellow in younger days. They are actually quite an orange colour, well many of them. I posted pics of him before as "big white dog" and also saw him in a five dog encounter one morn..no gun.

I know him from my game cam pics and atm I at a loss as to where more of him are. I have pics on pics on pics here ha ha.
One thing for sure is that the lost pics imo show a decided 'other breed' influence and at times i have thought...wait for it....Labbish!

I can tell that the dogs either side of him are the yellow type.

And a year ago the sad saga below was posted on the SD

Well its going to be a long tale of woe for today. As in another thread this morning it was too late to get to my ambush position so a scan of the carcase from afar was in mind only, then a drive up to check the traps.

Q: Bas I woke to my own dogs going off at 4 AM this morn, the idea was to get up and walk to a vantage point over the carcase with the 7mm,I rolled over and slept again,at 6AM atm I cant get there in the time required under darkness. They get another chance.I have a couple of traps up there so will check those with crossed fingers.
They are elusive *******s! EQ

So in breaking dawn light I got my own three dogs and headed up the back with my binos only, stopping to grab a big heavy Manfrotto out of the shed on the way. As it was poor light and the bino`s are 15 x 56 Swarovski`s I wanted to be rock steady. There was a very light mist `tween me and the carcase and I walked uphill alongside a rough little creek to a point 250 yards from my house,my dogs as usual were scenting all of the smells of the previous night.
The dog went into the sword grass creek and the two bitches were doing their own thing when I heard my dog give a 'yip' righteo, ah ha he`s onto a fox probably. The bitches dived into the creek and its cover interspersed with blackwood trees and sally gums. Then Berry came out all excited and embarrassed and unsure...**** me that`s got to be a dog in there as that is how she looks when confronted by wild dogs...foxes she simply hammers! Wild dogs she scruffs the schitt out of when they are dead.

I saw my dog run out of the creek 45-50 yards in front of me,he stopped and turned to face the very big creamy dog doing a 'sortie' , A very powerful dog with a deep forend/ brisket that looked like he almost had a touch of malemute in him... Meanwhile I am glued to the big Swarovskis and he was that ****ing close he filled the 56mm objective lens.....aarrggh! **** me! No rifle, nothing!

Big creamy dog turned and went back into the cover and then I saw another three, all red dogs coming in the trees. My dog went back in and the pack of wild dogs came back out,big creamy the obvious boss dog looked at me standing at the tripod. I was wearing a super bright fluoro orange camo jacket and my pajama pants (true) he then focused back on my dog and then another red ******* (4th red) came out with a rush,it glanced sideways at me and turned back with a snarl on its dial. It had a very light bit of brindle striping on its side.
The wild dogs went back into the bush,I went home grabbed Mr 7 and came back and did a bit of howling which encouraged new bitch to whine a bit too,I was glad of that and have a plan now lol. A good and bad day. I was 720 from the carcase btw.

I went back home extremely disappointed and got my ute and checked my cameras, the photo`s are from last night showing big creamy and underlings.
He is the top dog alright,he had his pic taken 20 times while the others waited,he wasnt sharing!

Anyway even though I didn't have a rifle in hand the sight of those dogs in 15X binos at 45-50 yards will remain for a long time.
I ordered another pair of Jakes yesterday, the war continues.
Solid lad he is.

I mentioned malemute above but on further reckoning after viewing other pics..Labbish.

This is the dog that I want the brindle ****,well both really but have seen neither in life or g/cam pics since these shots.

Hi John

Thank you for the additional detail and photos - reading again puts me there with hair on the nape rising!
Brindles time will come - the Tree of Woe calls.....

I should have known by the D ring on the bottom. Do you ever come across any Newhouse traps down there in OZ? I’ve got some that have to be over a hundred years old and the springs are still super strong. They are double and single long springs. I get the same feeling when using a Newhouse trap as I do when bird hunting with a quality double.

I had a number 48 Newhouse Otter trap given to me 35 years ago. A mate found it in the mouth of a rabbit burrow,it would have held any dog but it was more for water/slide sets with three teeth for catching the belly fur. Great trap and i`m ****ed off that I sold it with my trap collection.
What it was doing in Oz has me ****ed ha ha.
many wild dogs do you believe are in your area ?
No idea at all they roam at will.
