Firearms medical

Went to my GP and asked for the revised charge, now £128 cash.Said to them could get it done independently for £75 and they would have to do most of the work for nothing.Would not budge. So went with the Kent based doctor reccomended by BASC and had the report within 2 days of the posted response leaving my surgery.Tried to be fair to my surgery but what a bunch of intransigent pillocks!!

just had to get mine done last renewal it was £50 this one is now £65 from my GP
took it to them on a Wednesday and picked it up on the Friday after the recessionist phoned me to tell me it was ready to pick up

I used Medcert for my recent renewal, they were as professional and efficient as I could hope for, my GP surgery on the other hand were obstructive to say the least
Mine were the same. I did end up holding them (& the police) jointly responsible for any costs I may have incurred (long story). Ticket renewed within 2 weeks

£85 for me 2 years ago, £30 at the previous practice. Hopefully the don’t put it up as applying for my son’s grant at the same time that I do my renewal so could get expensive!

the thing i dont understand is - the majority of these practices are NHS. so how is there such a variation in pricing? I paid £50 back in September, and tbh i thought that was fair and reasonable, and had everything back within a week.

Because it falls outside the scope of their NHS contract.

I am in no way defending GP’s pricing but I think they will charge a lot of money to make you go elsewhere? I discussed this with my gp when I was trying to get my dad’s certificate through, so the easy way to explain this is that the gp him/herself has to fill it out it can not be done by office staff ok. So if you have a patient like my dad and myself that’s been in and out of doctors/hospitals getting operations since they were 14 or in my case 22 due to what ever illness you have (with us it’s Crohns) so lots of medication/conceltations/operations they are obviously all logged on our file ! In my dads case 60 years of stuff so it takes time to do as you can imagine it’s a large portfolio and the gp said it can take 5/6 hrs to go though his so The question is at what time of the day do you expect your doctor to do this? At night after treating patients all day or should he just not see his patients that need help so he/she can fill out our forms? Doctors also are dead against it because it’s the police passing the buck to them incase something goes wrong with a gun owner so then the gp can be partially blamed instead of the police getting all the flack. My renewal is up this year so I’m going to have to look at a third party as the doctors are busy enough as it is keeping people alive never mind filling out forms for us. Just my opinion

Not defending gps but you take the cost that a lawyer charges per hour , plumbers, joiners, mechanics, gunsmiths list is endless that all have an hourly rates . I suppose why can’t a gp charge per hour for his time for filing out a form for recreational shooting ? And I really don’t see the nhs making it a mandatory requirement for gps to fill out the forms ( I think it should mandatory)

If the Applicant is renewing a Certificate, is there not an argument that the only relevant medical history is that to have changed/developed during the life of the Certificate - the last 5-years? In short the 'condition' the Applicant presents at time of renewal? This of course assumes the previous renewal required completion of a "Medical Form".

Technically yes but I see a different doctor everytime I’m in so they don’t know my full history so that’s why they need to go through the whole file 😤

The question is what patients do you want them to not see while they are doing this? A third party is definitely best for the gp practice and the patients

Going back to the original post, I've just received an invoice from my GP practice and they charge £50+vat £60 with approximate 4 week turnaround, they took a week to acknowledge receipt though.

Just adding my experience.

Im going for my first renewal since the medical changed.

Went to my GP on Thursday 21st Jan at 5pm, the receptionist was well aware of the process, had a text on the way home today (Monday 26th Jan) to come and pick up the completed forms.

£75 and 2 working days turn around.

Turn around was a lot quicker than they said, just a week to inform me that the form was sent by secure email.
D&C firearms messaged to inform me of receipt, then two days later sent me another message reminding me to send in my medical form 🤔
