First rifle

Ok then.
I have just received my first FAC, and have slots for .22lr and .17HMR, so I am debating what rifle to get for pest control, and a bit of target. I'm leaning towards Anschutz 1417. for weight reasons.
Any other recommendations?
.17HMR can't be used at the range.
Thanks all.

I happen to have a nice CZ 457 in 17 HMR with a mod that's good to go. ;)

The CZ are pretty nice for the price, accurate, well made.

I'll bare that in mind. I don't want to be contravening sales rules. I haven't made enough posts yet ☹️

By no means do you have to looks at mine but the sales rules are for posting ads and replying to the 'Wanted' ads, not buying from them.

Have a browse.

I have a lightweight CZ457 .22LR synthetic with the shorter 16" barrel. The weight just 2.4Kg (plus the scope and the mag). Great little rifle. And the .22LR ammo is very versatile, you can buy cheap rounds for plinking, or more sophisticated bullets for pest control. There's also a 25 round magazine, if you need rapid rate of fire.

CZ457 action is a great starting point for both calibres. For the 22LR you should look at the match chambered versions.

I avoided that match chamber variants because my understanding was that the tighter tolleance mean that it can be iffie with cycling some types of ammo. But, obviously, not having bought a match chamber rifle.... I don't actually know if it's true.....

Anschutz are quality rifles I have had mine for years in Thumbhole super accurate

They are indeed, however they are also (obviously) generally more expensive than the CZ and Tikka.
OP is considering an Anschutz so he will know the costs, you pay a bit more but you end up with what you want in terms of premium 17 HMR

Very briefly, with a Match chamber the tolerances will be tighter. Generally a bullet will seat well
Into the lands. On extraction of an unfired cartridge the bullet may be left in the chamber.
No probs in a match rifle but problem in a hunting rifle.
Hunting rifles will not have a match chamber so no worries.
There are over 100 different .22 chamberings, don’t worth the manufacturers will chose an appropriate chamber for the type of rifle in question.

I had all sorts of 22lr rifles semi auto, bolt, lever, takedown. Having a RFD as a mate and a forgiving FLD I got through a lot of rifles. However for many years I had a Brno model 2, and a Ruger 1022. they both had slightly different jobs. But I swapped both for Anschutz rifles one has a match action the other the sporting action. I don't have any issues with either they are accurate (with the correct ammo (same as any other 22)).
As for 17HMR I have avoided them for long enough however the early issues seem to be sorted and it fills a gap in my needs. My local RFD has a choice of CZ's for little money so that is what I will be getting.

You know what that's a really good point, totally agree.

I've never thought about why I like them so much before, but it's a sort of "tool for job" feel that I'm after. I came from air rifles and had a very expensive (for me) top notch AirWolf that we scratched and bumped. I hated using it as it felt like an ornament. Got the CZ200 and was shooting better groups with less faff and for much much less. I ended up with two CZ200 (2nd hand) for less than I sold the beat up AirWolf for!

I really love my CZ and Brno. It is incredible what quality you can get for such little money. My CZ455 was £314 new! Great tool. The stock is too short and low but my friend’s laminate version is brilliant.
