Home office consultation on deregulating sound moderators

There is no need for them to waste more of our tax on a stupid law they brought in in the first place ! just get rid of it ?
:stir:

Why on earth were they ever considered to be licensable ?
Obviously not in of itself capable of discharging a projectile, civil service ignorance and mission creep I guess.

I am currently thinking about swapping a wildcat for something lighter on my .243 but cant really be bothered with the paperwork.
I think the trade will get a bit of a boost if common sense prevails.

Common sense not very common though is it.

Now if they do not need licensing, will the price drop?

Well anyone with some machining experience could start making them and wouldn't need to be an RFD so maybe. Are most imported moderator's from countries with strict(er) controls than the UK? If so then the price of those probably won't fall.

If you can just post them freely then the price of secondhand units could go up as you've now got a wider market and no RFD costs, or prices could fall as people start selling more and and changing what they have as it's much easier to do so 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why on earth were they ever considered to be licensable ?
For sure they were in the 1937 Firearms Act, as here "firearm, except where otherwise expressly provided, means any lethal barrelled weapon of any description from which any shot, bullet or other missile can be discharged and includes any prohibited weapon, whether it is such a lethal weapon as aforesaid or not, any component part of any such lethal or prohibited weapon, and any accessory to any such weapon designed or adapted to diminish the noise or flash caused by firing the weapon".

So you'd need to go back to Hansard and the Committee Stage or 2nd Reading of the Firearms Bill that became this 1937 Act to see why. It was not in the 1920 Firearms Act
