Hornady seating die problem. Neck inwards

The Hornady Die has a crimp on it. Read the instructions on how to set it up with using a crimp.

what is happening is the seating die is turned in too far and its crimping the bullet and then pushing case neck down.

what I do with Hornady die is:

take a sized case and it in shell holder. Drop the handle.

turn die until it makes contact with rim. Then back it out half a turn and lock in place.

wind out the bullet seating Adjustment

then adjust it so the bullets are seated to correct OAL.

loud powder and seat bullets.

then if you want a crimp.

wind out the bullet seating adjustment.

wind the die in half a turn till the crimp touches the neck. Then another 1/8 of a turn in. That should be enough to give a crimp.

crimp loads.

you can set it up so you can seat and crimp at same time, but I always find this a pain and you get the inward pushing of case as shown by OP.

I had this problem with 22-250 full length sizing dies I bought 2nd hand.I replaced the stem ,expander ball and depriming pin and all was well.As yours is happening when bullet seating I would back the die off and start afresh.

Thank you for the step by step guide.

And thank you all that commented 👍

I've got it sorted now hoping to actually make a real one today.

Haha. I'm sure I have the correct die. Got the hornady 2 set die kit

Tbf i probably better find someone who can walk me through.
You should stop pulling once you feel the resistance of the case mouth meet the die, did what you’ve done a few times when I started out and had only used a lee dead length seat die where the shell holder meets the die base

New question : do you wash your fired brass before putting through the full size/ deprime die ?

I've brushed inside and lubbed the outside, it goes in the die easy but very hard on the way out ? I think it's because the "powder residue"

I know some guys have a deprime die separate but I don't. Should I wash the brass with old prime in before putting through the size/deprime die ?
Yes clean the brass before sizing keeps the die clean makes further case inspection easy.

The old crimp or no crimp one you’ll never get a straight answer... most will say no though. I wouldn’t lubricant inside of necks as it’s really important that the release pressure is the same every bullet and metal on metal is more consistent than a partial lubricant application. I’m sure someone will disagree with all of the above but that’s forums for you!

Not lubricating the inside of the neck could be asking for trouble. Superdrazy has already mentioned the drag when withdrawing the expander button so while I understand your thinking Utectok I wouldn't agree with you. Personally I like to remove all case lubrication (both external and internal) after sizing even though I use a Lee factory crimp on most of the ammo I reload.

I dont use the expander but instead got myself a mandrel this saves dragging the necks back if the button is tight and needs force to withdraw ,i also lube inside the neck and just reclean again after they have been sized , Bit OCD but prep = a nice finish to the effort put in lol.

Go back to basics, you've got your seating die set up wrong. Basically you're crimping the bullet tight in the neck of the case and then trying to seat it to depth resulting in concertinaing the case.
Back off on the crimping and just seat the bullet to depth then adjust the crimp.
this ,back off the crimp and get a lee factory crimp if you need to crimp, much much easier atb ,doug.

interesting I use a lee collet neck die and it sizes to a mandrill. It never sticks well not so far lol!
