My brother had been quite ill with lung cancer for quite a while but he fought it bravely right to the bitter end! Mick knew that he was dying but he would never let it get him down! Unfortunately he lost his fight at 9 o'clock last night.
Mick passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his wife and 2 sons.
Mick was not only my brother but he was also my best friend, the sort of friend that everyone would want. At times when I made a mess of my life (which I often did) he was always there for me. If I had a problem he would always do his best to help sort things out. If I just needed someone to confide in he always had a good listening ear.
We used to go fishing together (Both coarse and fly fishing) and we also used to race grass track race cars together - Mick was a better race driver than I was even though I had the faster car. We were with different Grass Track Racing Clubs so we often had to race against each other and then the gloves came off, but after the race had finished we were best of buddies again. In days gone by we were both HGV drivers and if Mick was passing near to my home he would always try to "run out of driving hours" when he was near my home so we could have an evening and go for a drink together.
When you have someone close to you that is ill for such a long time and you know that there is only going to be one outcome they say that you have time to prepare for the inevitable, and that is true but only to a certain extent. I had plenty of time to prepare but no matter how much you think you are prepared when the end comes it still hits you like a ton of bricks.
I am going to miss my Brother and Best friend so much.
Rest In Peace Mick, I could have never have wished for a better brother than you and I will miss you like hell!
There is one song that springs to mind and I will always think of Mick every time I hear it:-
