LANTRA - Humane Dispatch Course

Probably a good idea to just do the / a course, & then when you find yourself involved, you did the right thing, I would take the right course of action anyway.

You are probably right finnbear,
the BDS course has just got a whole lot more realistic and gives you more of what you may expect to find on arrival at any RTA.

In Hampshire becoming a Humane Animal Dispatcher is not good reason to apply for and possess a pistol solely for that duty .....that is the quoted policy.

Thanks to all for a very intersting thread.
Doing some catch up on here:-D
Im very interested on going on a humane dispatch course.
Just a little back ground , i have worked for the local goverment highways for 30 years now , part of this job entails of being on call .
Call outs can range from trees down / flooding / RTCs involving deer and other animals.
And have attended RTCs with deer which are DOA , so being local goverment we dispose of carcases via incinerator.
On the way to work one morning a young fallow buck got clobbered and the driver drove on - deer was still alive and in a very bad way - so had to use my razor sharp knife to deal with it!! ( knife used for work purposes!! )
My thought of doing the course is of gaining additional learning .
I had 2 of my highways colegues aproach me this week and told me how a van driver drove on after hitting a fallow buck and its rear end being damaged badly and it being left in the road still alive.
These guys stopped to assist with the traffic management for the police officer on the scene.
A gentleman shortly stopped and had a firearm in transit with him , he aparently spoke to the officer on the scene and then proceeded to do a humane dispatch!!
The next bit i was told concerned me , and that is , they expected a bang from the gun but is was muted thop!!! and it looked like he put the barrel at the base of the antler !!! , and that it took 6 shots to dispatch it!!!
I was not there so cannot speculate or nor would not judge this person who has tried to help!! , but would like to say i have known the highways lads for years on the scene and to say that they dont exagerate..
They also mentioned the police officer on the scene mentioned how distressing they found it with the animal having 6 shots to dispatch it before thanking them for the traffic mangagement and help !!!
I dont prefound to be a humane dispatch professional , but when the guys told me this and how their faces looked distressed as they were telling me ,this concerned me and i felt composed to apoligise for what they witnesed and explained that those in the know - dispatch them much more swiftly to end the suffering as quickly as possible ( situation depending ).
Your thoughts will be very much appreciated!!

Sounds like a farmer I know who despatched a sick sheep with an airgun. "It was OK" he said. "I just kept on firing shots at the same place until eventually one went through!"

Wouldn’t mind doing this bu when I offered to police ( Scotland) I was told oh we don’t do that .....
Yet ...Monday morning at 07:30 house phone goes, and it’s Police Scotland ....someone clattered a deer 10 minutes north of me so away I goes expecting police and maybe a commuter .....
Nothing... just a deer hit back end crawling about the road in dawn light on a busy coastal commuter road to Aberdeen!

I dealt with it and removed then called them back and told them it was cleared but
It’s got me thinking ...what if’s

Anyone know if police Scotland starting to use folk for this now?

My name & number must be on some obscure list somewhere

Thanks Paul for your insight ,much apreciated!!!
Not good either with no police on site!!!
I had this at 2am on a Saturday night with a RTC involving 2 vehicles.
We attended the scene , 2 police officers was doing traffic management while we cleaned up the scene!!
10 miniutes later they disapeared from the scene and i dont care what they say , they should not have left the scene and put our lives at risk as well as other road users!!!
My dealings with the police in my job ( and outside) has been great , i think they do a marvelous job with the little funding they get , but in this case they made a silly mistake that could of been costly!!!
I contacted my highways steward and police about the matter and asked that should not ever happen again - they was very sincere and apoligised!!
Be safe out there people!!

I have done the course. It is useful. The weapon of choice is a double barrelled 410. Other essentials are a knife and a blanket.

There is some guidance on the DI website.

Wouldn't be my first choice!
.410 yes, but why a double?
I'll stick with my single barrel moderated one which is much more discrete. Can you even get a moderated double?

Hushpower do make a moderated O/U 20 bore.

I use a Hushpower Mossberg .410 pump action single, though previously bought a folding SBS El Chimbo hammer gun for the purpose.

Yeah I've seen the 20g but never a .410.
A lot of mine are in urban areas including my last one which was at the local hospital outside A&E jammed in the front of someone's car!
I have a folding Pedretti which has a full length barrel shroud and is very quiet even without subsonic cartridges.
