The original Accuracy International Sniper Rifle was fitted with a Schmidt and Bender 6x42 Scope. The turret was marked with simple dots for different ranges and it was perfectly usable on man sized targets out 800 plus.
I have used 6x scopes to shoot gongs out to 600m, and have taken deer out to 250m which is more than enough range for me.
A Roe buck is about 25 to 30 cm from its sternum to top of its back, or about 50cm from its sternum to top of head when its head is up. It very much depends on the cartridge and how you have zeroed, but set your sights so bullets strike about 4cm or 1.5" high at 100m, the bullet will drop about 25 to 30cm at 300m. So at 300m you need to hold about half a bodies depth above the back line. Personally I don't like shooting at a range where I need to really start thinking about holdovers or adjusting the sights.
