Recoil Management

Ive said this many times, it amazes me just how little time some folk spend behind their rifles. Obviously theres expense considerations but some range time a few days a year should be a minimum.
Range days would be nice but we're all different and I prefer to go stalking, even if it means that I don't shoot as much.

Ranges don't/cant simulate a stalking situation for many reasons just the same way a clay shoot can't replicates to practice for duck/pigeon/pheasants/grouse shooting as the clays don't put the brakes on or tip a wing.
It is just not the same, people must like the order of going to the range and getting their card signed (bit like a library card)
Cutting over a ploughed field to make a shot is not in the same league as rocking up with your kit and shooting a target at range day lol

Using the clay shooting analogy; he who keeps their eye in, busting a few clays over the off season in most certainly going to fair better on the first drive than someone who hasn't seen their gun since the end of January.
Same applies with the rifle if you dont use it much you're going to need a good dog when things get difficult.
Nothing shameful about having a practice, what do the marines say, "train hard fight easy"

I use a 7prc without a mod shooting 175grn for Reds and I definitely have to shoot that differently to smaller calibers. My 204 is practically a single hole group but I find I have to put in a lot more shooting techniques to get a good group at range with the PRC. When I'm out stalking then I have a larger kill zone than a 1'' circle to hit.

Show me a sim day for last light on teal kneeling in the mud in a gale of wind then your soft day on pheasants might get a pass 🫣
I have not shot my .270 for 18 months (been using the .243) new scope last 4 trips after setting the scope 4 deer 1 foxes (put a note in my year to year book) "no range day required"

A lot of it gets down to muscle memory, at the range I pretty much always shoot off quad sticks. The way that this manifests itself out stalking is that I can concentrate on locating the deer and assessing whether its a suitable cull animal against a safe back stop, deploying the sticks and mounting the rifle comes almost instinctively. Others might disagree but it suits me.

Practice makes perfect!

Back stops yes, the rest just I don't buy into as the well practiced range/stalker shot will miss by the very nature of shooting as that is part of it.
The facts are you will miss no matter how much you practice, I set my .270 up the other day in gusting 20mph wind at 70 yds after a few shots it was 2 in the bull.
Set it up on a still day and how do you deal with a 20mph

Too much thinking just go shoot

70 yds Tim....long range indeed

On a serious note if it works for you then spot on, really that's all that counts. I enjoy range days for the banter rather then putting loads of rounds through the rifle. Given your behaviour its probably best you keep to yourself to avoid offending people face to face 🥰

Next time when people have a dig at my family on here Mike should I get you to remove their comment or admin?
My guess is you don't want to get involved

The fact that its meant in all good humor Tim should speak volumes. Didnt realise you were easily offended mate so will stop the leg pulling and keep my comments to myself. Take care bud 👍

I am only offended when people who sit behind a key board and take a swipe at my family, the simple fact is people do that from a key board thinking it might be funny.
Have fun at range day :tiphat: 😇

Fair enough Tim, but i wasnt having a swipe at all mate, and it was restricted to you and not your family. People in glasses houses and all that but lets politely agree to disagree.
