SAMMI vers CIP

Yes they said it was chambered for RWS rounds unfortunately they are not available in the local shops I could get some on 200Grn but wouldn’t fancy these
I'd send the frikking thing back for a 3500 pound refund. What a bunch of crap. Only chambered for ONE 30-06 cartridge? I'm guessing they are lying. ~Muir

People sell the shyte once they‘ve had enough of it and Merkel‘s policy of ignorance and keeping customers at distance.
Your right they have been messing me around from the first minute I complained about it lm also not too pleased with with the shop I purchased it from they should of sent it back the first time it went back .I returned It on Thursday I tried to trade it in they said no thanks we’ve only sold three of those and had trouble with all of them in other words thanks for your business now get stuffed

the chamber is spotless the rifle has only had approx 100 rounds through it , the Barnes rounds were terrible every one jammed the bolt
Have you had a look at the chamber with a bore scope?

And, that is a nice photo of the ammo box, but the cases themselves are kind of fuzzy. Can we see the cases from the side please?

I would not invest another penny that rifle. It would be back at the factory in a heart beat, along with a note saying that if I didn't get any satisfaction from them I would spend the rest of my waking life bad mouthing their rifles at every opportunity. (I did that with Ruger when a serious accuracy problem I had with the then-new 77/22 Hornet was dismissed by Ruger as my inability to shoot. After nearly 25 years I still won't recommend a Ruger Model 77 in any flavor to anyone.)

These are the guys who asked the OP the wrap 400 grit around a stick and polish the chamber???

And screw the dealer who blew him off as well. I'd run newspaper ads describing the service I got.

I would be livid, indeed. Hell. I'm mad and it's not even my rifle. ~Muir

Yep👍.
I am staying well clear of Merkel / Haenel. They‘re a bunch of hobbyists trying to play with the big boys solely based on the heritage of the Merkel brand.

Ammunition from US has to be CIP proofed in order to be sold to general public in CIP country. Importer takes care of that. CIP proofed ammo will not work in CIP proofed guns in all cases (like max size ammo doesn't fit min size chamber in e.g. 308) but usual interpretation for "fit for purpose" seems to be that CIP rifle works with most commercially available CIP ammo.

Just return it for refund, as not fit for purpose.

I wonder, whether Merkel has a right to proof their rifles instead of independent proof house (CIP has provision for this) and whether the rifle in question would pass independent proofing. Personally I might even try it, because I live few kilometers away from Finnish governmental proof house... but only if dealer refused to take it back. I've seen bunch of firearms that did not pass independent proof.

Pretty sure Hornady (and all other ammunition manufacturers) will be doing all of that, not the importer.

(Nice to note that even their 'lead-free' ammo carries a lead warning due to the primer, as most 'lead-free' ammo still uses lead!) :thumb:

Yes jthyttin Proof is another point, I would not trust any German proof agency after talking to a few German and other rifle manufacturers. (they couldn't find go, no go gauges that matched the ones being used in the agency..)
I would like to see the result of one rifle being handed around the proof agencies in Germany.
Rumours are that larger companies just do sample testing....

Interesting article on the Merkel Helix. It does comment than the chamber is made to minimal headspace and that it is pretty intolerant to poor quality ammunition.

And that the action with it’s geared bolt throw needs vigorous working and is pretty intolerant to slightly over pressure cartridges.

A bolt action rifle has massive primary extraction power to unseat a spent cartridge from the chamber. You don’t get this on a straight pull.

I haven’t used Remington 30-06 ammo, but I was given a few boxes of green box 7x57. It shot well enough but certainly noticed some rounds a little hard to chamber and a bit sticky on extraction. Some rounds had brass coloured primers, others silver - it really was not good quality ammo.

Ammunition will be type tested by National Agency (proof house) before it's released for sale.

After passing type test, either National Agency or manufacturer tests the ammo in batches of up to 500 000rds (production/manufacturing tests). I wouldn't bet that testing rights have been delegated to US producers since it would require periodically inspecting the equipment etc. Printing the required markings on ammo boxes (at time of manufacture) deemed for export makes perfect sense, otherwise they'd have to be added by importer.

BTW that CIP proof mark is from Germany, Proof House Mellrichstadt.

There's an SD member , who I won't name , bought a Helix and it grouped like a shotgun pattern . I believe he got his money back after a protracted battle with the importer .
My past experiences of dealing with Viking left me vowing to never buy any product imported by them ever again . My opinion is that they are a shower of excrement.
Best of luck to the OP .

I have never seen Remington factory ammo with "silver" primers. I shoot a lot of Remington 9.5's and they are all brass color. Are you sure those weren't handloads?~Muir

They might have been. It was a cheap lot from a gunshop. Most still had original seals but some was not. It’s why now if I am buying ammo I want a factory seal unbroken on the box.

Sorry about the quality of the image I will have another attempt

Thank you chaps for the replies the way I see it now is return it to Viking arms for a repair questionable dewalt and sand paper ,send it somewhere to be measured then push for a refund if the chamber is too tight or three find someone with a chamber reamer to open it up
