Wow. So you would need a FAC to buy a Pard 007 to shoot rats at night even with a low powered/standard air rifle?

Yep - Firstly, regardless of power, all air rifles are FAC here. NV and Thermal are licensed as a Firearm here too. They technically always were but it was never enforced. You walk into a shop and buy one no hassle.

There's was almost a sort of "amnesty" for them a few weeks/months back. Garda issued letters to all FAC owners asking them to declare any NV or Thermal and they would issue a license for them or amend your current to reflect that you have NV/Thermal on the gun. It supposedly for anti poaching but lads who do it will do it under a lamp either way so cant really see what the point of it was.

Personally I was hoping our shooting orgs would kick off about it because its ridiculous but it seems to have just happened and we bent ourselves over and let it happen.

Edit - you can have NV and thermal monoculars, just the scopes need to be licensed

This has been proposed and deliberate and a recent felwg meeting. It was agreed that they be removed unfortunately they are not quick to implement change. I suspect when they have enough amendments certified they will do them in a batch

It’s on ticket when it’s attached to a firearm? Or you need it in your ticket even if it is hanging off your neck?
Apologies, Hook'N'Bullet is entirely correct, "night sights" only attract the requirement of addition to ones FAC when/if they are mountable on a firearm. Where they are used purely for scanning ground and not for sighting from a firearm they are not subject to entry on ones FAC. Quoting from the Garda Commissioners Guidelines on page 41: In the Firearms Act 1925 to 2009 the definition of a firearm includes 'telescopic sights with a light beam, or telescopic sights with an electronic amplification device or an infra-red device, designed to be fitted to a firearm....." Which pretty much covers all the current technology.

Would that rule out lamping with a torch attached to the scope?

I've asked my Thames Valley firearms dept the following, but no reply yet. Any ideas on an answer from any of you experts please?
I have an air rifle on FAC and for various reasons don't want to renew. Selling it has proven impossible, neither private shooters nor RFDs wanting it. So it must be scrapped by an RFD who I'll have to pay. So be it! But I want to strip it of its accessories before disposal, viz. Sling and its mounts, telescopic sight, bipod, AND sound moderator. But the latter is listed on the FAC. Am I allowed to take it off and keep it after I no longer have an FAC, or would it be illegal?

Currently it would be illegal to possess without an FAC as a moderator for such is itself classed as an S1 item, even though it’s the exact same moderator that you can buy for a non FAC air rifle.
Instead of paying to have the air rifle scrapped, just arrange to hand it in to your local Police, they will gladly send it for destruction as they can then use it to gloat about another weapon being taken off the streets.
I hasten to add that you must make a prior arrangement, don’t just walk into your local nick with it unannounced.

Thanks for the tip Len. Making an arrangement to get access to a front counter might be a challenge, and a long drive - they've all closed down round here - but I'll certainly give it a go.

I’d far rather The Home Office addressed the following:
a. The mess that is the GP medical form sign off lottery.
b. The crassness and inconsistency of the so-called “approved land” condition. (Raising this for a friend.)

It's very frustrating isn't it. I'm out with the rifle and mod regularly, but want to swap/upgrade the moderator. The police won't add a spare slot temporarily for me to be able to get a new one, and THEN dispose/sell the existing mod, so I have to be without a moderator, while I sell/dispose the current one, ask for a 1-4-1 variation, and then buy the new one!

Unless I misunderstand the process?

There is a survey out asking for opinions. Whilst it clearly deals with pressure, its not really an essential component for a firearm. Its a safety device in the sense it helps reduce injury to peoples hearing and arguably reduces noise nuisance. But its a tin can that isnt relevant to a firearm per se.
