Tikka T3x Tac A1

Morning all,

I have the opportunity to purchase a Tikka Tac A1 in 6.5 Creedmoor at a good price. What are peoples thought on the rifles themselves? I have had the opportunity to look at one but not shoot one. The price is good that I could buy it and rebarrel it for cheaper then a brand new one.

The tactical stock is the main stand out point as I like the look of it(I keep trying to convince myself that if it looks good it’ll shoot good)

Thanks

Jack

Mine is a 6.5 CM. I have shot 5 inches at 775 yards with it prone off a bipod. Great trigger. Good stock.
But...
It's not a 'stalking' rifle in any sense of the word. Mine resides in a custom hard case waiting for trips to the range. Target work only. If you're a hunter, you might pass. If it is a really good deal and you can resist, you can indulge without fear.~Muir

Agree with Muir, certainly not a stalking/carry rifle, it's heavy, but I also have the 6.5CM, 24" barrel, and it's excellent.

I reload the Hornady 143gr ELD-X, and went to "Orion" a long range shooting ground in Wales. Within an Hour, I was shooting gongs out past 900yds, never having shot further than 300yds previously.

The wind was very forgiving, but I was hitting the gongs consistently, to the point where it became a little boring. Don't get me wrong, I very doubt I could shoot a decent group, I just don't have the patience, but the rifle mad the gongs easy, and I found the chassis stock really soft to shoot.

It is an excellent platform. The chasis a little heavy for stalking but ideal for sitting out over clearfell.

I have one in 223 as a cheaper option for target shooting if you don’t take it PM me the details. I may be interested.

Get it! You won't be disappointed. I absolutely love mine. Shoots fantastic...looks fantastic. Like others have said though it is on the slightly heavy side so not ideal for stalking, but if you don't mind carrying it then its not a problem.

I have one in .260 with a 20” barrel. 1/4” groups all day, pleasure to shoot, don’t want to carry it too far. Overall I would recommend it.

Great bit of kit....... I never shot beyond 150 meters before (I'm a stalker not a target shooter) and i had a few rounds through my mates and I was hitting things at 400 meters AND that was shooting right handed! (I'm a lefty) ... so it shows even a wrong handed person behind that stock can shoot it well. Its in 6.5 creedmoor and he changed the trigger to a timney 2 stage (don't know what the factory stage is like but the timney is sublime..... and im now on the hunt for a tac 1 trigger to convert theft handed for my tikka).

I have one in 260 great rifle but not for stalking shot 300 rounds and thought nope needs to go . So if anyone is looking willing to let it go at a sensible price .

Or any recommendations of a stock to drop it in to make it lighter ?

Tac 1 chassis is ok - ther are better out there to choose from that are lighter and made with enhanced thought of design issues with the corrosion fairies

Tac chassis can be a bitch to strip down and often need replacement fixtures due to stripped heads and galvanic corrosion

The two piece design and “ring” are the union of the forend is not ideal

If it were me I’d consider the barrelled action and then an alternate chassis
Such as Vision , MDt, or KRG

All offer a better product in my view

There are more chassis makers in addition to these

As ugly as sin….but very functional and known to be one of the best tack drivers for the money out of the box - have a look at tinterweb and YouTube - many well known enthusiasts rate them highly.

The corrosion resistance is very bad, but the chassis is very adjustable, comfortable to shoot and have a very good trigger.

I would not buy one for stalking but for target shooting they will do whatever you need and as many have commented online you can be competitive out of the box with one (there’s a good vid on YouTube of someone using one in a PRS competition and doing very well)

Regards,
Gixer

I like mine…. A LOT, but it’s ugly, heavy and the butt lop adjustment is not simple and tool less. Non of those are a deal breaker for me as once it’s adjusted too fit and has a lighted trigger spring, it’s a Tac driver sub moa at 1,000 yards. Wind permitting 🤞🏻

Oh and I’ve fitted a PRS bag rider and Fortmeir bipod under barrel

As others have said it’s heavy for stalking… but they are amazing!!

I’ve had two, one in 6.5 Creedmoor and one in .308 both better than rifles 2.5 times the price !!!

Well I made a change out it into a CTR stock along with flush MDT mag and it’s now a light weight rifle

I really liked mine but eventually sold it to get my AI.

The only thing I didn't get on with was the chassis angled outwards immediately above the pistol grip.. so if you shot with a neutral thumb position then it'd bend your thumb outwards which would get quite u comfortable after a while.

Love mine and stalk with it. 6.5cm. I shoot out to 1400yards (target) with this rifle, it's extremely accurate. Although I've had it re barrelled, it now has a 28" heavier one. The key for me carrying it around is the sling. If you use a butler creek neoprene elastic sling it takes all the shock and bounce out of carrying it. Like suspension on a car, makes for a smoother ride and you don't notice the weight so much. Its not a quick handling rifle granted but never been an issue for me.

Love mine. Had one originally in .308 but sold to fund my stalking rifle, but then replaced with one in 6.5CM. As most have said, mainly a range rifle but have used it for high seat work as it isn’t light!

I have one in this calibre and it is perfect for long range targets. Very accurate & well made. In my opinion too heavy for stalking unless you are just sitting in a high seat.
