What Rifle Calibre to Add or Change

25-06?
If copper is to be the future, and velocity is advantageous for reliable expansion, then a 100 grain at 3250fps would seem to fit the bill.

I've been reading about the .275/7x57.......loading options from 120gr to around 180gr......It certainly has an awful lot going for it and as someone famously put it.....has killed just about every game mammal on earth over the years

A 6.5 or a 308, you will find ammunition and reloading components everywhere, you can shoot anything from 90 to 150 (for the 6.5) so it will drop just about anything. There are an abundance of rifle models available in it and it’s relatively light recoiling, you can also use them in competition out to silly ranges over 1000yards.

I borrowed a 300wm to shoot hogs in the USA, granted it was unmoderated and a light weight rifle (a Ruger of some description I think)

It gave me an actual headache when zeroing….

So many options. Are you after something unusual or just something else? What sort of deer do you generally shoot?

I'd bin off the .243 and get a .25-06 because they're just better. Whilst you're at it, and if you are likely to shoot bigger deer or boar, put in for a .30-06 too. Find a rifle that's really comfortable and buy two the same. You get a spare magazine for both rifles because you just take the mag out of the one you're not using at the time, and you can set them up so they're both familiar. Essentially the same in every way apart from the cartridge they fire.

You could do the same by just adding a .308 to what you have and buying the same rifle. Or you could go really oddball and get something like a .358 Winchester - still uses the same magazine but you'd most likely have to buy used and rebarrel. Or.... Rebarrel the .243 and get a 6.5 Creedmoor as your small deer gun.

There's a lot to be said for having two rifles set up the same. It just feels really natural. I have a .25-06 and a .35 Whelen (necked up .30-06) - there isn't much I can't do with a .25 and .35 combination. It basically counts out the big 5, that's it.

30-06 calibre of the gods
Tusker
Oooo….good suggestion….can’t beat. 30-06 for all round capability! Lovely to shoot as well.

The only downside is the amount of powder they consume…my 06 is around 51grains for a 150gr vs 42 grains in a 6.5 for a 140gr. Which is around 30 less rounds per 1 lb of powder…

But I still love my 06 and would never sell her.

Nooooo!

God uses a 300 Win Mag.

In all seriousness if you want the best allrounder of the lot a 7MM Rem mag is as good as it gets. You can load down to little hand grenades or up to heavy weight game loads...faster, flatter, farther.

As can be seen there is a vast array of projectiles to choose from.

I like the idea of the same model. For that very reason I am thinking of getting rid of the 243. It’s not the rifle, easily sub moa at 100 yds, it’s the stock.

The 25/06 and 30/06 combination is something to think about.

Another thread where people just recommend the calibre they use! I’ve got a 7mm08 and a 7mm RSAUM …. But I wouldn’t recommend either given your current cabinet content.
All the calibres work. It’s the one that you can feed and shoot that is best for you.
You’ve got a .243. No point having a 6.5 creedmore or a .308…
Something at the other end of the spectrum.. you need a .270, a 3006, a 7mmrem mag or a win mag…

Or for a modern cartridge the 7 PRC.
circa 44 years I have been using my 7mm RM,I actually took it with me tonight for a wander and sit before dark. I was gonna let her rip too but Sambar deer dont always play the game.
I`ve said this before when the WSM`s came out in reply to a bloke that suggested "get rid of that old 7mm mag dinosaur Griff and get modern with a 7mm wsm"

I replied "the last 15 shots from the old dino shot 14 sambar deer and it does nicely thanks"

SILENCE LOL.
