Trophy Ban Bill

Thank for flagging. Watching carefully, looking to hunt ibex and want to bring back a shoulder mount late this year/ next- this bill was an ongoing concern of my. I Asked basc but waiting on comprehension response/ their assessment of where things stand.

There was a (person) on Sky news this morning going through the papers ranting on about how vile, terrible
and horrible members of the shooting and hunting community were taking all these beautiful creatures. Trouble was he was in his house sat in front of an aquarium full of exotic fish. Did any body see the ( person) he had rainbow couloured glasses on and works for a Liverpool Radio station. You couldn't make it up .

I think that there will be plenty of Ukraines who would like to put the president of Russias head on there wall.

It would appear for the time being to have been cancelled, if that's the right word? I think there was strong opposition to the bill, and rightly so. It was based on the greenies and so called conservationists that had little or no understanding of the way game is managed and hunting conducted around the world. As the UK is signed up to CITIES, it already covers the protection of certain animals that are classified as endangered.
Therefore an outright ban of most animal products would have been a minefield, and would not give any endangered species added further protection, in fact it would have the opposite, in my opinion.

Not to mention the slightly neo-colonial overtones. Banning the trophy import to so called protect these species is essentially saying 'dumb natives are to incabable of managing their own wildlife - they need to be told how to do it by someone from Islington'.

The call for a ban is 100% animal rights driven - which is fair enough (although I would not agree). However, dressing it up as conservation and using dodgy disinformation diminishes the force of the argument. As has been said, the conservation models which have produced such good results in recent years in Southern Africa depend on hunting whether it be "trophy" or "biltong" level as a key component. This is widely recognised by most conservation bodies from IUCN down.

I assume you've heard of the camp fire scheme, which has been in place for a number of years?

What is the actual name of this bill? Is it part of the animal welfare (sentience) bill? Which is currently being introduced, at report stage, and debated in parliament right now!

edit- I see this thread is calling it animals abroad bill. Is there still the possibly for elements / provisions of the former to be picked up at amendment stage by the latter bill? I suppose it will come down to how wide the scoping report / policy memorandum of the sentience bill is.

From a quick look on the following https://committees.parliament.uk/work/1368/animals-abroad-bill/ the animals abroad bill looks like pre legislative scrutiny was started, but perhaps not completed. It doesn’t appear to have been introduced to parliament yet.

I’m lead to believe that it will need to feature in the queens speech (as an accompanying note if not verbally expressly named) in her address, likely to be may time, for it to progress in the coming parliamentary year. If as news reports suggest, it is dead, it won’t feature in queens speech- one to watch….

The second reading in parliament was actually set for today after it was pushed back from February. It was part of the Queens speech 2 years ago but covid got in the way. Looks like Covid and the Ukraine has put a stop to it but it would not surprise me if it was being pushed through on the blind side.

The interesting bit in the Times article was that there are about 200 heads imported per annum and that they are banning 7000 species.

Virtue signalling nonsense

Absolutely I have. It is an excellent long term conservation plan that works. And sadly, this Government seems intent on kicking the legs out from under it to satisfy the readers of the Guardian in their London town houses. Emotion over science; which is too often the case when it comes to policy for hunting and shooting.

There was a chap on GB news pontificating about animals being shot mostly in fenced areas.
But did not say how big the area, if was not open land I would not be interested in hunting there.
