SAA not carrying firearms anymore.

Heads up anyone off to Africa in the next few months. It appears the South African Airlines have not renewed their security to carry firearms, on external or internal flights. They are not renewing in the future either.

Taking firearms to Africa is just the most hateful process.

Due in Mozambique at the end of the year (booked since 2019), we have already had our flights with Qatar bumped to a slot which no longer works for the connections.

Trying to get full refunds from them is proving emotional.

Now booked with BA. Painful, painful, painful.

Boarder Force, temporary exports for each firearm and each box of ammunition, Notarising documents, Jo'Burg and all the joys that never fails to bring. Fines, 'facilitation fees' just hateful and endless.

Whilst there is every possibility that this will be our 'last hurrah', should the Gods ever find me heading out there again, then I will just use whatever rifle is available in the Camp and save myself a fortune and huge amounts of angst.

Thankfully Airlink still appear to be carrying firearms.
That's for internal flights. SAA are finished otherwise.

Yes its a right pain in the arse. It was a pain back in the 1990's when I did most of my African hunting trips. Now its worse than ever, and in my opinion really puts anyone off taking a rifle anywhere. BA I have used before, and trust me they are useless at carrying firearms.
To me its just another way of stopping us hunting, with all these restrictions.
Hope your keeping well.

I fully sympathise with you. We have also had our October Qatar flight moved (possibly the same one) and no sign of a refund yet. The process is horrendous. Annoyingly, the camp has exactly the same rifle as me, but no left handed one for my wife. It would have been less stressful to cure her. I did suggest that I could find a right handed companion to take but my wife didn't seem too keen on the idea...

I've only done it twice but both times with Virgin it was pretty straight forward and hassle free at both ends in both directions.
I must have been lucky which is unusual with me and air travel.
Likewise I have done 2 SA and one to Namibia with Virgin I found them very good. The Namibia one was earlier this year and Airlink did the Johannesburg to Windhoek flights and all of it went very well. Virgin carrying firearms was all hassle free, they even bring down your copy of the firearms paperwork to you when you are in your seat, Airlink were very good as well my first time using them

I've just come back from SA and used Safair for the internal flights to Port Elizabeth and East London. They carry firearms and I can honestly say I was very impressed with their service - a very pleasant surprise indeed.

Something not right there - change control in the bottom left corner says that these are effective January 2019; I flew SAA from Heathrow to J'burg in October 2019 with firearms & ammunition & then back again in November 2019.

I'm guessing though that is more of a reflection on their ability to keep that document up to date than the accuracy of its contents...
