I am the fourth generation of my family that has gone to live in a part of the British Empire that have become independent whilst they have built their lives. The first three didn’t end up so well - Shanghai at time of Boxer Rebellion, then Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Its taken over 100 years and a huge amount of blood gor Shanghai to re emerge, Zambia after 50 plus years is showing some promise and Zimbabwe is still a long way off.

Britain is not doing so well after leaving the EU - the numbers don’t lie and we are basically now bankrupt as a nation.

Ireland - well it became independent in the 1920’s and their followed a very bloody civil war in Southern Ireland and then the troubles in Northern Ireland were only settled 20 years ago, but they still can’t agree on a government. The Irish economy is now doing well thanks in large part to the EU.

Common factor in all of the above is nationalism of all colours. It promises wealth and riches for the many, but in reality pain and poverty for the majority, whilst the very few gain massive wealth.

Nicola, Boris, Nigel, Kaunda, Trump, Mugabe et al are all the same and all follow the same doctrine and yet are simply puppets of some really nasty individuals who just line their pockets.

have you seen the privatisation of the NHS in England? Remind me in Scotland how much you have to pay for care when you are elderly...do you need to sell your home to pay for it?

My mother is in a care home, it's £850 a week and yes she had to sell the house that she and my father worked bloody hard for.

Hm . A shot in the dark , but you seem a bit defensive . You have left leaning , seperatist beliefs , that's fine . Unfortunately , like a lot of people on the extremes of the left or right , they're exactly the same to me , you throw insults instead of having a discussion or backing up what you believe . It's obvious that you don't give a rats about what anyone else thinks , but seem to get annoyed if others feel the same about you . There are a number of people on this site who are also left leaning in their politics , I actually enjoy talking with them because they back their statements with facts . Maybe give that a try , you might even convince a few people that you have a valid point .

I'm not wrong. You're lying to prove a point. Desperate. It's well documented that social care and carehomes are free in Scotland, but not in England. Seems you might be fussy about the home they are in, but that's your choice and not the government's fault.

If you need to go into care and have assetts exceeding £29000 ish (including the value of the family home), they'll take the property, sell it and use the proceeds until the drawdown on your funds reaches the figure I've quoted ... and at the best part of £1100 per week, that doesn't take very long. Only then will the local authority start picking up the tab.
I bought a flat in Glasgow 20 years ago and my MIL and FIL lived in it rent free. FIL passed away 8 years ago and MIL is now in a care home after developing dementia. Social worker actually intervied my MIL and took the word of a dementia affected woman that the flat belonged to her. On the camera that we installed to watch over my MIL, we could almost see the social worker rubbing her hands together when she thought that they could acquire and sell off the property. To say that she was not impressed when I informed her that the property belonged to me and that my MIL was confused was an understatement.
Nevertheless, my MIL had over £75000 in her bank account and the local authority are drawing on it right now and will continue to do so until it hits £29000.
So YES ... even in a local authority provided care home, if you have assets as described above, you WILL pay.

The "United" Kingdom has always been a somewhat uneasy conglomeration of countries joined together by their similarities, and the thing they have most in common being that they don't want to be joined together. Ireland of course has a long history of strife and violence, both by the English and by the Irish, which has caused a fragmented country, resulting in bits of it still in the UK and an independent state. Wales has a similar history although in more modern times it's been less violent. The Scots too have, in the campaigning season (after the crops are gathered and before winter really sets in) took it in turns with England to send armies into each others' countries to rape, pillage and conquer. All of the other countries say that the worst violence over the centuries can be laid at the door of the English. Which is true. But that's only because they were better at it, mainly because the population, therefore their armies were bigger. Be in no doubt though, if Scotland, Wales or Ireland had the power, we'd all be tossing cabers, munching leeks or Irish dancing.

The UK has truly only really been united in times of great danger. It takes a World war or two to show how great Great Britain can do things. But when left to our own devices, we squabble like anything. Which is a great shame.
