25-06, any good?

That's not a calibre issue. Even with varmint bullets you will still take out at least one lung and an artery. Muppets.
No kidding… my son ( he’s 7) has killed several deer with 1 shot from a 42 grain 22 hornet…. He’s never had to fire a 2nd shot and not one of them ran more than 50 yards and was dead. When we cleaned them, their lungs just fell out in pieces.

All chamberings go bang....smack. its up to You to send the bullet when and where required for the response you want. Its a deer your shooting not an armoured tank, so any of the deer legal bullets will easily floor your deer on the spot. 100grn barnes go straight through a reds chest at 350m. It's dead on contact some might not accept it for upto a dozen steps but a vet on hand isn't going to revive it.

That's it, our New Zealand forrest service approved 222 for our govt hunters back in the 50s, for the next 20 30 years it was the most popular calibre killing hundreds of thousands of red deer. The pros wouldnt have used it if it didn't do the job as they had to take tails for proof of kill.

shot only about a dozen deer with 25-06, all with 117g using SST's. knocked them the F*** down quick, but did not kill them quick! none of the bullets excited. distances 75-250yds, game ranging from very small deer to very large deer.

Very impressed with trajectory and knock down effect, very unimpressed with terminal performance. I'd definitely prefer something like a 120g partition in mine, but it was not mine ;)
When you say slow kill what do you mean? When you shoot a deer in the vitals with a smaller cal that chops up the vitals but doesn't always exit they only move as far as no oxygen and no blood pumping allows them. Most animals that get knocked down and never get up or hardly move is only from the shock of the bigger whack from whatever bullet you are using. At 200y or even 75y you can't see them still chainstoking those final stages so think they are stone dead immediately, by the time you get there they are, they're just whacked so hard they don't move while doing it, it doesn't mean they die faster. Unless you neck or head shoot them obviously.

Never been a fan of SST in any calibre, they just don't seem to hold together compared to Nosler BT Hunting, Accubond or Partitions.

Accubond is a decent bullet. Proper punch through without too much meat damage in the .270.

I use the ELD-X in the 6.5x55, they make a fair bruise although bloody accurate. May just be a hornady thing

I don't know but then, neither do you. I didn't watch them shoot. I didn't see the deer. I'm not besmirching the 25-06, I'm relating my experiences with it. ~Muir

What I do know is lighter calibres with lighter bullets correctly placed kill bigger deer species than you have up there. Sambar Wapiti even Moose.

we’ve a pile of moose’s here but the 25-06 is a bit too much gun imho.
To the OP, 25-06 is the perfect do it all future proof gun with 100gr copper such as ttsx or fox. And there are even slippery long range bullets for target as posted above now.
What’s not to like?

Greetings all,

Recently i come across a lovely rifle chamber in 25-06.
It's a unusual cal, have anyone use/own one?

What is your take on it?
Good/bad?

Is it like a 30-06 but chamber in a smaller cal?

It is a .30-06 necked down to .25 caliber as you say.

It’s not just good, it’s phenomenal 😁

Shoots flat, hits hard and has a very light recoil, especially with a moderator. Kicks like a .243 but hits like a .270.

In my view one of the most underrated cartridges out there - get one, you won’t be disappointed 👍🏻

I would totally agree with the above, post 57.
I had one for years, a Tikka T3 and shot lots of red and roe with it. The problem I had or rather the game dealer had was meat damage on roe.
Eventually he prevailed on me to change it for a 6.5 Swede which is ok but not as fast and flat as the 25-06.
Mine was in mint condition and it was a big job to sell it, nobody was interested.

Awesome! That's exactly my thinking, just don't understand why its so underrated and misunderstand 😄
