1 gun for everything

Hi lads,

I shoot a number of calibre's for all round shooting. foxing, stalking, plinkiking ect ect. however I am thinking of selling everything other than my trusty .22 and getting 1 all round rifle. most of my stalking is roe fallow and muntie's out to 300yards but I do like to play out a bit further for practice.

what would your 1gun cabinet have in it is my question? I'm thinking maybe something of the 6.5 variety!?

any help would be appreciated

thanks bullet

If long range plinking is your thing then how about a 6.5x47, I'm no expert but it would cover foxing and stalking too wouldn't it?

Can't believe nobody has mentioned the .270! The ability to push medium weight bullets out on laser flat trajectory, enough weight potential for anything in the UK, Europe and the US (even bear), and at a pinch plains game, if not the dangerous stuff.

Potential for surprising accuracy out to 1000 yards, and with a moderator the recoil is manageable.

There's a reason the .270 is one of the most popular stalking calibres in the highlands!

matt, the.270 is a fantastic round and one of my choices for red deer too but I think its a bit much for foxing especislly out of the landy window! I like the sound of the 6.5x47 for the all rounder, but what are the advatages and dis-advantages between the 6.5x47 and the .260 or .260AI?

thanks bullet

The three 6.5's are very close.

VV reloading date flatters the 6.5x47L by giving very mild load data for the 260rem.

The 6.5L is very good and very accurate, but runs at pretty high pressures.

The 260rem is the simple solution - loads of cheap brass - resize 243 - easy to reload, makes full use of the 308 sized action.

The 260ai is just a bit more. It gets maybe 100fps (if that) over the 260rem at the price of potential feed problems and brass needing fireformed etc.

For a practical do it all rifle, 260 is the anwser. Mine does 3300FPS with 100gr BT's, 2900FPS with 120gr BT's and 2750 wth 140gr Accubonds. It kicks the tripe out of the 25/06 and is very near to the 270win in real world performance, with a lot less noise, recoil, and a much smaller powder burn than any of the rounds on bigger cases. The 260, not the 243, really should be the default choice of UK stalkers, the 243 just beat it to market by 40 years or so.

so we're basically down to 'anything' from 6x57 to 30-06...he he he goes to show, they will ALL do the job if you put the RIGHT bullet in the RIGHT place.

consider what is available within you price bracket, what you would LIKE to own and what calibres that rifle is chambered in. IE, if you'd love to own a Sauer, only look at calibre's they offer in that range, probably pick the mid-range calibre too, so you have 'enough' for the bigger one's, and are not 'overkill' on the smaller one's.

siimples...

...but if it was me,,it'd be a 6.5 creedmoor on a surgeon action and custom wooden stock with jewel trigger and any decent barrel.. ..of course teflon coated black.

+1 for the 6.5 creedmoor, I had one built last year and think its fabulous, only hornady brass available at the moment but good quality and lots of reloads from it, mine loves berger 140's 0.159 groups @ 100mts and getting tighter now barrel has more rounds down it and for what I use it for going to stick with the bergers, very popular in the states but not heard of many if any using it over here yet, usual choice of 6.5 bullets long barrel/brass life very accurate low recoil superb accuracy, whats not to like.

PJ.

For years I would have said 30.06 but the 7-08 deserves a good hard look. The more I see of the 7-08 the more I like it but oh dear decisions, decisions....!

it would be interesting to see how many times this question/thread has been created in the past (lots) and what the OP ended up buying..and if indeed they still have 'just the one'!
