1 gun for everything

I like the .243 cal its my go to rifle for roe and fox, i cant honestly say i shot anymore foxes with the .22/ 250 i had for 10 years or so or even the .220.
I have never shot deer with the 70bts but i know how potent and accurate on deer my rifle is with 75 and 87 vmax and 95gn bt's.
Might not be the perfect medicine for the largest of stags with h/l shots, but for staggies hinds and all my other stalking im sure i could get by.
When the time comes i was considering rebarreling with a 6.5 varient or poss 7.08 ,but im sure i will stick with the .243
Apart from that i suppose a . 300 magnum would be the best all rounder for deer pigs even a trip to africa, i Know people on here that shoot muntys with little damage and you have all that horsepower in reserve if bigger animals bit big for fox but then dead is dead

Er, yeah, the "one gun for all" concept's nice enough. Except for one tiny little point - we're all little boys really and love our toys far too much to be content with just the one. Am I right or wrong lads ??

will,
It looks like your right, the more I read the reply's to this thread the more I think I could be doing the wrong thing by going from 7 to 1!!

I do think the .300 would be a little to much to use from the truck though ;)

I'm afraid I agree with Matt - the .270 with 110grain V-Max bullets will do anything you ask on anything from Foxes to Big West Country Reds and ammo is easy to get hold of

308 :) 85-150gr plinking loads to 220 r/n ,You can use it for rabbit to mouse , accurate with plinking 25yds - to 1000 yds+ sniping

Similarly, I wanted a good solid rifle and scope combo I could use for regularly lamping fox and stalking roe, but would be more than capable of the larger uk species. After much reading and talking to some knowledgable people I decided on a sako 85 in 6.5x55 with a Swarovski scope and I'm very pleased with it. I have home loaded Hornady vmax 95gr for the fox and Hornady 140gr SP for the deer. My deer load is bang on at 100 and my fox load it 2.5" high at 100. - and for what I do I'm happy with that without having to re-zero. Good luck :)

Can't believe nobody has mentioned the .270! The ability to push medium weight bullets out on laser flat trajectory, enough weight potential for anything in the UK, Europe and the US (even bear), and at a pinch plains game, if not the dangerous stuff.

Potential for surprising accuracy out to 1000 yards, and with a moderator the recoil is manageable.

There's a reason the .270 is one of the most popular stalking calibres in the highlands!

Totaly agree 270 just change the grain and head for different types of game and keep a card for each after shooting the rounds in, the cal is excepted all over the world , not so good for 308 , 223 etc

Shepard scopes top piece of kit easy to zero and range your target no other scope compares

got to be a 270 i love mine and would'nt swap for the world . they do seem to be not the most popular look on guntrader it's all 243 and 308

thanks for all teh reply's lads, alot of useful info but I think the 375 H&H idea is just to much for a truck gun aswell as doing all the other stuff!!
