.300wm
The 70gr ballistic tip seems to be the most versatile round for fox and deer. Can't believe nobody has mentioned the .270! The ability to push medium weight bullets out on laser flat trajectory, enough weight potential for anything in the UK, Europe and the US (even bear), and at a pinch plains game, if not the dangerous stuff.
Potential for surprising accuracy out to 1000 yards, and with a moderator the recoil is manageable.
There's a reason the .270 is one of the most popular stalking calibres in the highlands!
Similarly, I wanted a good solid rifle and scope combo I could use for regularly lamping fox and stalking roe, but would be more than capable of the larger uk species. After much reading and talking to some knowledgable people I decided on a sako 85 in 6.5x55 with a Swarovski scope and I'm very pleased with it. I have home loaded Hornady vmax 95gr for the fox and Hornady 140gr SP for the deer. My deer load is bang on at 100 and my fox load it 2.5" high at 100. - and for what I do I'm happy with that without having to re-zero. Good luck![]()
