What is the best whisky

This is obviously a topic that interests a lot of people and to decide which is the best whisky or whiskey is no easy task.

In the interests of everyone, after considerable thought, I should selflessly like to volunteer myself to discover the answer. In order to further this, I would ask each SD member to forward to me a bottle of their preferred tipple. I will then do a write up and post it on here for the benefit of all. Probably.

Nobody said it had to scotch or Irish, Nikka Yoichi 12yr old is a belter from our friends in Japan. The Japanese have been making serious whisky for a long time. Hope spelling is correct as finished the last bottle a while ago and hoping Santa will bring more.

When stalking Red stags in Speane Bridge I tried Benromach Peat finish - I bought a bottle from the Whisky Exchange online and opened it last night - delicious! Delivered with it was Balvenie 21 year old port finish and Glendronach 18 year old sherry finish - anyone care to join me for a few drams?

Springbank and Campbeltown loch, worth a try. Very nice. Oh Campbeltown Loch I wish you were whisky............

Jeez the smell is enough to put "sensible folks" off.

Mind you I drink alcohol very rarely. in fact I have a bottle of White rum on the shelf above me that I opened a couple of years ago now. the level is still just only just below the top of the label. I had the bottle for oh some 15 years before it was opened I suppose and there is another that Mother bought the Christmas I moved up here so that must be tens years ago now. I drink it with Coke or Pepsi when I do.

Beer is disgusting too BTW.

If out I will drink Cider. Preferably one with flavour and not that fashionable acid stuff. Blackthorn if that's all they have but prefer medium ones and the old Woodpecker is nice as was Gaymers Olde English, but have not seen that in years. Farm or Rough cider usually has more flavour than Blackthorn or Strongbow and crap like "K" and "White Lighting" is best described as drain cleaner.

Funny thing is Mother won a bottle of Glenfiddich at the village craft fair. I said the same to the ladies when I picked it up after they said it was good stuff. Passable drain cleaner I suppose. It's joined the other half dozen bottles in the cupboard as dad will drink anything as long as it has alcohol in it but for the last few years he was not allowed to drink due to medication. That has stopped now so he can have the odd drink but we have to ration him as alcohol now effects him very badly. A pint of beer and his balance is totally shot now due to the strokes and damage they caused..

Anyone heard of "sheepdip" whisky ?
My 85 year old father in law has been on about it for years. I have tried to find a seller for ages but have failed !
I would love to get him a bottle for xmas, so if anyone knows of a stockist or even if it is still in production, then give me a shout please

I have been lucky to have a number of good malts given to me over the past year by good friends who have come stalking with me.

BUT no matter what your favourite malt, they always taste better when you have come back off the hill, after a succesful days stalking, with a good meal inside you, a roaring log fire to sit by with a few good friends, with the raining hammering against the window, and all is well in the world.

Good whisky needs good friends and good times to go with it ;)

+1,and thats from someone who cant drink the stuff normally..............BTW,any suggestions for a Novice whiskey drinker, which, how etc?????

Ok, my spellings are probably off but I've got

Lagavullin
Laphroaig
Bunnahabin
Bowmore rocks
Abhainn dearg
Glenmorangie
Glenfiddich 18YO
Glenturret

I like them all and therefore find I have to have a dram of each to keep things even!

I worked with Chivas on a project some time ago and was told the correct way is to add room temperature water to reduce the alcohol content to around 28% - 30% ABV (so roughly 2 parts whisky 1 part water) - but each to their own?

My favourite is Pinwinnie.

This may sound strange as I'm not a fan of blended but Crawfords 5 Star is quite acceptable . I much prefer the peaty malts with a drop of spring water .

Is anyone heading over to Isla for next years Whisky Festival week?

We went this year and had a fab time with all the free testing so have booked again for next year (along with 2 mornings buck stalking on Dunlossit Estate...), reckon the best we sampled was the Bunnahabhain :thumb:
