Hi all, I know under the new hse guidelines we should all be using copper in our deer rifles and we are allowed to use lead in the .22 centrefires for foxing etc. can anyone tell me if we are still allowed to use lead ammunition for foxing in the .243?
Thanks

There are currently no “legal” restrictions on lead ammunition for rifle ammunition in this country. There is the likelihood of restrictions in the future that also involves using lead shotgun ammunition

As advised above. No change yet. But my understanding is that IF the proposal is made law, then .243 owners would need to use copper at such a time the law comes into place. Hopefully someone can correct me if I am wrong

Unless you are using a shotgun on wildfowl or over water (the exact restrictions depending on whether you are in Scotland or England and Wales) there's no legal restrictions on using lead. However, landowners might restrict your use of lead ammo and if you are stalking those who might buy deer might not if it's been shot with lead.

As for vermin or fox control, definitely no restrictions at present. But as for the future......

Under the current proposals you will not be able to use anything .243 or above, in the field for quarry, with lead bullets.

But it is only a proposal currently, not law.

I wonder how long it will take for some person to get caught using a target bullet (think ELD-M) for quarry and we lose lead bullets all together…..

The HSE recommendations will need to be considered by parliament and then enacted in law.

The proposals are that all ammunition and components for use on live animals from 6mm upwards will be banned from sale.

However the 243 works very well with copper bullets, and if you put them in the right place no fox will ever know the difference.

Target ammunition using lead cored bullets may continue to be used but only on ranges when there are adequate facilities to trap all the bullets so that from time to time the lead can removed.

So and according to HSE a (.243) bullet measuring 6.16mm which is clearly < their stipulated 6.17mm is a "small calibre bullet" (just) = No action.
