308 choices

Hi. Looking for opinions please.
I recently got my variation for my .308 and foolishly raced out to get the first one I thought was ok which was a Savage Arms Axis, I mounted my scope and zeroed it in.
But after going out a few times I found that it just doesn’t feel or fit right. So I have decided to change up.
So I have narrowed a few rifles I am drawn to and after a recent visit to the Stalking Show and trying a few I have narrowed a few down but I wanted to see options/experiences please.
I shoot deer all over and my syndicate in Scotland is starting to get Boar so looking for a good all rounder, new but don’t want to break the bank.

Option 1. CZ 600 either Ergo or Varmint
Option 2. Benelli Lupo
Option 3. Sauer 100XT
Option 4. Mauser either M12 or M25 straight pull
Option 5. Browning X bolt 2 Nordic

I have a scope I like already which can be mounted.

Thanks in advance

Darren

I’d add a T3x and Howa to that list. My preference being the T3x, but it must fit and feel right or you’ll be back where you are with the Savage. You’ll never shoot well with a rifle that you don’t have confidence in. Ideally try a few different rifles before you part with your £.

Costly mistake - just swapped a X-Bolt .270 for the Tikka I should have got originally and trade-in values were pathetic, if a dealer was actually interested. My excuse was it was during COVID but it’s a costly lesson. Like others, I’d suggest you add Sako and Tikka to that list. I still have my original 75 from the 90s, a S20 and now 2 Tikka T3X lites, the latter being functional tools that simply work and without a high price tag. All now have the same Sako 2-stage triggers and safety release - makes it much simpler.

Watching this thread with interest as I have a .308 slot. I had a Sako A7 which was my first centre fire and which I should have kept.Have you thought about used as well as new. I bet lots of .308’s out there have done very little, so provided it’s in good condition, I,d consider one. I.m pondering on a used Blaser R93/on Guntrader near me…my pick from your list is the Benelli Lopo - great reviews and very modular so adjustable for fit.

Buy used, remove some of the sting.

I like my Tikka T3x but can't get on with the grip, completely the wrong angle for my hand. My other rifles are thumb holes with a more pistol like angle to the grip. At some point i might put it in a GRS stock

Have you tried the alternative grip that's available? Not used on myself but may be worth a look?

With all the hassle associated with changing rifles, it might be better/cheaper to change stocks, if you think the Savage barrel is accurate.

N.B. Ask Boyds to put "Wood Stock" on the invoice, to avoid problems with UPS re 'Gun parts'.
